MOSES LAKE - To all the kids who will be scrambling around McCosh Park Saturday, it might seem like all those brightly colored Easter eggs appeared in the park by magic. Reader supports Rep. Warnick, Dream Act

I appreciated the Dream Act article in the CBH. I wholeheartly agree with Rep. Judy Warnick's support for this issue. I absolutely feel that when someone willfully breaks a law then penalties and punishments are warranted and appropriate. Children brought here had no choice and in my view should not be treated differently from any other student or labeled illegals which infers criminal activity. Obviously they have worked hard to do well in school or they would not be applying for college admission. Also I feel strongly that there is a place for compassion in decision making of our public officials. How many of us have ever had to sheepishly try to explain an "honest" mistake, or have ever hoped the police officer would just give us a warning when we slightly exceeded the speed limit?

The Fishin' Magician: Trout on Upper Goose, Blythe and Corral

The hot kokanee fishing is still going on at Lake Chelan, but trout anglers will be shifting their attention to the Columbia Basin soon as a whole bunch of lakes open to fishing April 1. Right now there are a few year-round lakes that are producing excellent catches of rainbow. Upper Goose, Blythe and Corral are all providing anglers with good catches of rainbow, and there are dandies mixed in on their stringers. The best of the three is Upper Goose with consistent limit catches of 14- to 18- inch rainbow. Fishing isn't quit as hot at Blythe and Corral but there has been some rainbow weighing up to 5 and 6 pounds taken from these lakes. Make getting your new license a goal this weekend. You do not want to have to interrupt your first fishing trip of the year to stop and buy one. After the April 1 opener the next item on your calendar should be the Triple Fish Challenge Derby at Banks Lake on April 6 and 7. Go to web site at FishingMagician.com, click on the Pepsi logo, follow the links and learn all about it.

A great day for MLIRD Lakeshore Cleanup

We are so fortunate to live in a community that works to keep the Moses Lake shoreline cleaned up. What a beautiful day we had to pick up debris that is a threat to the lake and the wildlife that live there. If you've never participated in this annual event, you really should try to volunteer next year. The crew of the MLIRD have this event so organized that it is just a joy. We were first greeted by Beth (who remembers everyone's name) and Julie to sign-in, pick up our trash bags, plastic gloves, and a map of the area we were assigned. Then on to donuts (donated by Safeway) and coffee (donated by Starbucks) with all the accessories (paid for with a gift card donated by Walmart).

Edward R. Cruver

Edward R. Cruver

Edward R. Cruver, Pullman, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Whitman Senior Living. He was 94. A Memorial Service will be planned for later this spring at St. Martins Episcopal Church in Moses Lake. Edward was born November 30, 1918 in Moscow, Idaho. He graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane and went to work for The Crescent Department Store there. He met his future wife, Virginia Aucutt, while both were attending a church youth group function. They married and made their home in Seattle. Virginia was an elementary school teacher in Washougal and Edward worked as an aircraft mechanic for the U.S. Navy Ship Yard and also at Boeing. Through his years of hard work and dedicated service Edward rose to the level of inspector and would check the work of the other mechanics. They lived in Alameda, Calif. for a few years before moving to Moses Lake, Wash. in the mid-1950s. She continued to teach and Edward worked on the planes at Larson Air Force Base. Following retirement from his mechanics work, he was the warehouse manager for the Moses Lake School District for nearly twenty years. He was an excellent golfer and loved to golf whenever he could. He and Virginia were also members of the Moses Lake Sandy Sam's Club and took their Airstream camper on many camp-outs and as "snowbirds" for many winters to Desert Hot Springs, California for over twenty years. Edward's pride and joy was his yard at their home along Moses Lake. Virginia died in 2001 and in 2011 Edward moved to Pullman, Wash. to be closer to family. He is survived by a son Patrick and his wife Christiana of Pullman; daughter Cherie and her husband Paul Zehm of Oakesdale, WA.; 4 grandchildren, Emmett Cruver, Pullman, Micah Cruver, Portland, OR., Steven Zehm, Yakima, WA. and Jessica Parks, Alaska; one great-grandson, Alex Parks; and his former daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Cruver, Pullman. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson Tye Cruver in 2007, 2 brothers and 1 sister. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to St. Martins Episcopal Church in Moses Lake. On-line guest book is at www.kimballfh.com. Kimball Funeral Home, Pullman, is in charge of the arrangements.

March 27, 2013 6 a.m.

The Fishin' Magician: Kokanee on Lake Chelan

I got back up to Lake Chelan to get after the kokanee again, and this was my best trip so far. There were a lot of boats launching at Mill Bay and big packs of them off Rocky Point when we made our way down lake. We started off near Peterson's and a very slow start. We moved further out toward the middle of the lake and things changed. All of a sudden our rods started going off in quick succession. We got doubles, triples, and even at one point had all four rods go off and we landed all four of them. I had one fish one that took a couple of nice runs before breaking my 13-pound leader! We had nine fish in the boat in no time. Then the bite died, as it often does when fishing for kokanee. We trolled and trolled without success for about 40 minutes with nothing, and then it came back on. We ended up with 16 fish ranging in size from 12 to 17 inches, and got most of them at 90 feet. Don't forget to buy your new license before April 1. You'll need it for the "April Fools" opener in the Columbia Basin and to fish in the new Triple Fish Challenge Derby at Banks Lake April 6 and 7.

It went so far as to ban guns that had features that looked like assault rifles, regardless of whether those features made the guns deadlier.

Reader opposes Dream Act

I just read the Dream Act article and in that article the word "illegal" was used many times. Illegal at one time meant not legal or unlawful; does it still mean that? Did Warnick vote based on her own feelings, or did she vote based on want the people wanted who voted her in? When the illegals apply for the grant do they have to prove that they are illegal (unlawful)? How does that work? We the people vote and elect representatives who do not do what we ask. Could it be time to change things again? If it is illegal, it is against the law, period. Why can't they understand that?

Shame on Senate Democrats

The collegial environment enjoyed in the state Senate appeared to have evaporated last week in Olympia. It's because Democrats, led by minority Floor Leader David Frockt, D-Seattle, tried to advance a bill after a fellow senator left the floor to nurse her son, according to an article by Erik Smith, a reporter with the Washington State Wire.

Gratitude for a successful Senior Project

Recently I completed my Senior Project which was a soccer clinic for those with special needs followed by an exhibition soccer game to raise funds for the Special Olympics. I want to thank everyone who supported this project and helped make it a success. Many of my teammates showed up to the clinic as a volunteer to help with the participants. These same teammates plus many more as well as football and boys soccer players turned out for the exhibition game. We had a number of fans in the stand to support the fundraiser and I more than exceeded my goal for money raised for the Special Olympics. I especially want to thank Christy Dieringer who has been my mentor for this project, Lake Bowl who donated medals to give to the clinic participants, Havoline xpress Lube who donated money for tshirts, Papa Johns Pizza who donated pizza for the soccer game participants and Grocery Outlet who donated cases of water for the clinic and the game. But I most especially want to thank the clinic participants for a fun week and giving me the opportunity to share my love of soccer with them!

Albert F. Franz

Albert F. Franz

Albert F. Franz passed away March 11, 2013 at his home on Fir Island, Mount Vernon, WA. He was born August 30, 1917 at the family homestead in Schrag WA. He was the fourth child of six born to Peter and Agnetha (Ewert) Franz. The Franz's were German immigrants, from the Crimea area in Russia where they had emigrated on agreement they would teach farming practices in exchange for relief from conscription (military draft). The family first settled in South Dakota then subsequently settled north east of Warden, WA. Al was raised on the homestead farm near Schrag, graduating from Lind High School in 1934. As the story goes, Al wanted to attend college, saving money for two years after High School and when his father gave him $200, he went to WSC and UW, graduating from the UW in Mechanical Engineering. There he met Jane Montgomery, who would become his wife of 58 years. He served his country during WWII as a civilian working for Boeing as a tooling engineer on various programs including the B47 bomber. Al was an independent thinker, with an entrepreneurial bent and returned to farming in the Columbia Basin Project in Block 49, west of Othello in 1953 with Jane and their two young sons, Paul and Jim. He later joined the Grant Co PUD working on Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams as construction inspector, mechanical maintenance supervisor, advancing to project engineer. Following retirement he and Jane traveled extensively all over the world. After Jane's death in 2000, Al spent the last 12 years with his special friend, Ruth Wylie, where they spent winters in Palm Springs, and the warm months in Kennewick and then recently on Fir Island.

Fresh News from MarDon

Why wait for the April 1 opener when limits are being caught right now. As recent as yesterday limits of nice rainbows have been coming out of the Seep Lakes. The weather in early March always seems to be irregular but the trout fishing this time of year can be excellent. This spring a number of the year round Seep Lakes have been kicking out quality trout, most notably Upper Goose, Blythe and Corral Lakes. Goose has been the hands down best producer with relatively quick limits in the 14 to 16 inch range. Blythe and Corral have been producing occasional limits with some really nice 18" + fish mixed in, some running in the 5 and 6 pound range. All three of these bodies of water have easy access and adequate boat ramps. The best technique has been still fishing with bait.

Fresh News from MarDon

Central-Eastern Washington is enjoying the signs of an earlier spring than the last two years. Ice off was three weeks earlier this year compared to 2012. This past week bank fishing anglers were reporting quality rainbow trout from the southern shores of Potholes Reservoir. Six limits of rainbow's were also reported from the public access known as Blythe Point Boat Launch. One lunker trout 28 inches long was reported from these limits. Frenchman's Waste-way, where it enters Potholes Reservoir has been producing good trout as well. Bank fishers at MarDon Resort are having good action on rainbow up to 4lbs fishing from the shore and off the dock. Canal, Heart, and Windmill Lakes are also producing Trout. The bank fishing trout ammunition has been Berkley power-bait with a night crawler. Larger Rainbows are being caught using cocktail shrimp with a power-bait marshmallow or a brand name "Coon-Shrimp" (Larger Bait Shrimp) with Smelly Jelly.

Reader promotes responsible pet ownership

Is there a leash law in Moses Lake? We walk our dog on a leash all the time. We live on a corner and every dog in the area uses our yard as their potty patch. We are very annoyed to say the least and tired of picking up your dog's poop. Our dog goes berserk every time one is out there, and it is frequent. We are going to start calling the animal control, and you will have to go pick yours up. If you can't keep your dog home, you don't need to have one. We also get to watch many out in the road nearly getting hit. Then we call to have a dead dog picked up. It might be yours.
