MLPD names new police chief

MOSES LAKE - Dave Ruffin, a Moses Lake police captain, was named the new department chief this week.

Ruffin replaces Dean Mitchell, who announced his retirement in January and last day is Friday. Mitchell served as chief for the past eight years and has been with the department since 1979.

Ruffin starts as police chief Monday.

Ruffin is a 29-year veteran of the Moses Lake Police Department, according to Mitchell. Ruffin has been serving as a police captain for support services with the department.

Ruffin said Mitchell focused on the enhancing the quality of the department.

The city was also considering Moses Lake Police Captain Dave Sands for the position.

City Manager Joseph Gavinski makes the final hiring decisions for the city. He said the two captains were the only candidates for the job. He said he has always looks to hire within if there is a viable candidate for an open position.

Both candidates went through an extensive hiring process, including filling out an application packet and completing essays as well as an oral review.

No one has been selected to fill Ruffin's captain position.
