Chiefs lose to Pirates

YAKIMA - Moses Lake came oh so close to picking up a league win on the road at Davis High School Tuesday, but was outscored 5-4 in a shootout and dropped the soccer match to the Pirates 2-1.

"I thought the guys played well. We were a little dinged up so some of our second team players got an opportunity to come in and provide a spark," coach Bill Bertram said. "But we did have a lapse that allowed them to tie the match. We then had our first shot blocked and they made all of theirs so it was a good shootout win for Davis."

AJ Montes got the Chiefs on the board first with an unassisted goal 12 minutes into the contest to go up 1-0. The Pirates tied the match 1-1 at the 26 minute mark on a goal by Williams Pineda (Pablo Gonzalez).

The two goals were the only scores in regulation play as Moses Lake and Davis were unable to put points on the board in the second half of action.

The Chiefs had an opportunity two win the in the second period, but Pirates keeper Estevan Hernandez came up with a save on a Moses Lake penalty kick to send the game to overtime.

The teams were scoreless after the extra periods, so the match was to be decided by a penalty shootout. Hernandez came up big again for Davis as he got a hand on a Moses Lake ball to record his second of 5 saves to give the Pirates the win. The Chiefs Grant Fruneel stopped 9 Pirates shots on frame.

The loss puts Moses Lake at 1-1 in Big 9 league play. The Chiefs picked up a nonleague 4-0 win at Ellensburg March 21 to run their record to 4-2 overall. Jonny Cortez scored twice, and Andrew Camren and Edgar Maciel had a goal each for Moses Lake. The Chiefs are back on the pitch tonight when they host a league match against Wenatchee at Lions Field at 7 p.m.
