Local golfers hit the links

MOSES LAKE - Several area high school golf teams throughout the Columbia Basin descended on courses the past few days to pit their skills against one another. The following is a look at how they performed.

Moses Lake

The girls golf team hit the road to Pasco to take part in the Chiawana Girls Golf Invitational at the par 72 Columbia Point Golf Course Monday.

The format was a two-some chapman for the front 9, and a 2-person scramble for the back 9. Moses Lake placed third as team overall with a 173. Wenatchee was first at 157, and host Chiawana, second at 170. The Chiefs two-some of Terrin Utter and Emily Dennis placed fourth overall carding an 82.

On March 18, Moses Lake hosted the first league POD match at the Moses Lake Golf and Country Club. The Chiefs placed second shooting 401. Wenatchee was first with a 387.

"I was very happy with our team's performance in our first league POD match,' coach Lonnie Brown said. "Terrin Utter and Emily Dennis led the Chiefs tying for second overall with a score of 95.  Freshman McKayla Chavez had a great showing finishing sixth with a 97."

Moses Lake is out of action for spring break, but gets back in the swing of things April 8 for POD match No. 2 at the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club.

Quincy

The Jacks hosted the Okanogan Bulldogs Monday and game away the victor in the boys and girls competition.

The Quincy boys beat Okanogan by 122 strokes (344 to 466) at Colockum Ridge.

The Jacks were led by low round medalist Josh Schwint who shot 81. Jeremy Guthas was one stroke off the pace with an 82. Blake Van Diest turned in an 88, and Alexis Poi finished with 93.

The Lady Jacks found success at well at home with a 37-stroke win over the Lady Bulldogs. Vanessa Vanderwaide from Okanogan set the pace for the girls with a 101. Quincy's Shelby Basset and Elizabeth Diaz were two strokes back with a 103. Kyla Schaapman shot 116.

Quincy boys and girls are back on the links tomorrow for a home match against Cascade.

Othello

The Huskies captured the Othello Girls Invitational March 22 with a 54-stroke win over Toppenish. Royal and Wapato scores were incomplete. Kylie Kummer and Haley Guse were 18 hole medalists as each carded a 101.

The Huskies are back in action tomorrow when the team travels to Yakima to take part in the Lee Dolquist Memorial Tournament at Apple Tree.
