Recently, Chief Moses Middle School’s 6th grade students participated in a “Biz Kid$ Piggy Hunt” sponsored by Horizon Credit Union. The objective was to find a piggy bank hidden somewhere in the school for a cash prize. Easy, huh? Well, not as easy as it seems.

Piggy hunters watched “Biz Kid$” videos about financial topics like debt, taxes, windfalls, businesses and loans, completed worksheets about these topics and turned them in to specific teachers. Each completed worksheet earned the piggy hunter a small prize and a clue, getting them one step closer to finding the hidden piggy bank.

The 1st team of students to find the piggy bank was Megan Cooper and Madi Krogh. They were awarded $250.00 to split and an additional $250.00 for charity, which they donated to Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. “My strategy in the piggy hunt was to get at least two clues a day. And it paid off, too,” said Madi Krogh. “It was really fun, too.”

Jordan Pack and Conrad Johnson were the 2nd team to complete the hunt, splitting a $150.00 cash prize. $125.00 was awarded to brothers Luke and Ian MacDougall, the 3rd team to complete all the clues. All hunters who completed all steps in the hunt were entered into a drawing for the final prize of $100.00. Albert Mora was the lucky winner of the drawing.

Mrs. Hofheins, the principal of CMMS, said, “My favorite thing about the piggy hunt was watching kids getting excited, but learning about so many things along the way.”

Besides being a fun break from school routine, the “Biz Kid$ Piggy Hunt” at CMMS was an exciting way for 6th graders to learn about finance. Megan Cooper said the reason she participated was “there were cool prizes along the way and it sounded like a lot of fun.”
