Spokane artist featured at MAC

MOSES LAKE - Spokane artist Ildikó Kalapács' art is filled with the spirit of the human condition through splashes of vibrant color and textures from world cultures. Her artwork is now on display at the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center, at 401 S. Balsam St.

"My works reflects by conscience and consciousness about the world at large through the prism of the personal and political," Kalapács said.

An opening reception for her gallery was held Friday night and people filtered in to enjoy the art and live music by the Swing Shift band as well as wine tasting from Neppel Cellars.

Born in Hungary, she has a background in dancing and she uses this experience in her art. Kalapács also uses wallpapers and textures from different cultures as well as including photos of people from the cultures.

"I'm really interested in identity, culture identity, especially with globalization it's very important for non-western cultures to keep their identity," she said of her work.

A small sculpture called "The Bearing" will be cast life-sized and placed somewhere in the Spokane area.

MAC Manager Freya Liggett said the center is trying to broaden the offerings available.

"What's interesting about these is they're bringing in a cultural aspect you might not otherwise experience in Moses Lake," she said.

"I'm tying the impact of our species' actions to our human condition - physical, psychological and emotional - and to the condition of our natural environment," Kalapács said.

The featured gallery can be seen at the MAC until April 19.
