SPOKANE - Horizon Credit Union was recently recognized for promoting financial literacy among youth.

The credit union received the second place Dejardin Youth Financial Education Award last month during the 2013 Credit Union National Association Award Winners' reception in Washington, D.C.

Horizon won the award because of the success of its Piggy Hunt Program, a treasure hunt where youth search for the Horizon Piggy, according to a Horizon statement.

Students must complete financial education courses to earn clues that lead to the piggy bank and the $250 grand prize. Winners also have the opportunity to choose a local nonprofit organization to receive an additional $250, according to the statement.

The Dejardins Award is named after Alfonse Dejardin, who founded the first credit unions within Canada and the United States. According to the press release, Dejardin also promoted student and youth savings programs.

Horizon Credit Union is headquartered in Spokane and has Grant County branches in Moses Lake and Ephrata.
