Chiefs soccer beats Cadets

YAKIMA - Jonny Cortez scored one goal and assisted on another to help lead Moses Lake to a 2-0 road win over Eisenhower Tuesday.

The victory over the Cadets improves the Chiefs to 1-0 in the Columbia Basin Big Nine Conference(CBBN) and 3-1 overall.

"We played another great defensive game," coach Bill Bertram said. "Our back line of Tyler Courtright, Martin Cortez, Alexis Meza and Drew Happer really controlled the Ike attack. Midfielder Sean Cotton really played well too."

The match against Eisenhower was scoreless through most of the first half of action until the Chiefs Edgar Maciel tickled the back of the Eisenhower box with a goal off an assist by Cortez at the 39-mintute mark to give Moses Lake a 1-0 lead.

Cortez tacked on a goal off a penalty kick 17 minutes later to put the Chiefs up top 2-0 and round out the scoring for the match.

Keeper Grant Bruneel recorded eight saves for Moses Lake. Antonio Marera stopped four shots on frame for the Cadets.

"We are now 3-1 overall, with wins over GSL's Lewis & Clark (2-0) and Gonzaga Prep (3-0)," Bertram said. "Our only loss was to Mead (1-0) in our opener March 8."

Moses Lake was back in action Thursday to match up with the Bulldogs for a nonleague game in Ellensburg, but the results of the contest were not available at press time.

The Chiefs get back to league play Tuesday when they hit the road to East Wenatchee for a match against the Eastmont Wildcats.

"They look like the team to beat this year," Bertram said.
