OLYMPIA - A Quincy registered nurse has been charged with unprofessional conduct after allegedly obtaining more than 100 fraudulent prescriptions for drugs.

Gina Goodwin allegedly obtained so-called "legend drugs," whose distribution is restricted, between January 2009 and November 2010, according to a press release issued by the state Department of Health March 15. The statement of charges was filed Feb. 6.

Doctors must be authorized by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration to disperse legend drugs, and all prescriptions for those drugs must include the DEA authorization number, said Jodie Underwood, DEA communications officer. Goodwin allegedly obtained a DEA authorization number from a physician and used it without the physician's permission or knowledge.

Goodwin also allegedly used the names of other nurses when she submitted the prescriptions, and ordered some with herself as the recipient and others with her son as the recipient, the statement of charges said.

According to the statement, her son also was involved, repeatedly picking up or signing for the drugs. "The respondent (Goodwin) provided a signed statement admitting to this conduct," the statement said.

Goodwin has responded to the charges, and asked for a hearing, said Sharon Moysiuk, communications officer for the DOH. If she is found to have committed unprofessional conduct, she is subject to sanctions.
