Chiefs ready for league play

EAST WENATCHEE - The Chiefs dropped two of three road games over the weekend to close out their preseason schedule.

Moses Lake beat Bellarmine Prep 1-0 Friday, and then lost to Mt.. Si 11-4 Saturday morning, and 5-0 to Woodinville Saturday afternoon. Both games were played at Eastmont High School in Wenatchee.

Bellarmine placed seventh at state last year, 3A powerhouse Mt. Si took fifth, and Woodinville is the defending 4A state champion.

"The game against Bellarmine was one the best the kids have played this spring. Haylie VanLathen pitched a heck of a ball game, giving up just one hit. We had 5 hits and only scored 1 run, but that's all it took and I'm good with that," coach Dave Gregory said. "We didn't play well at all against Mt. Si ... committed too many errors. Sadee Smigaj took the loss for us. We played hard against Woodinville who is ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation. We broke up Madi Schrewer's no hitter, but gave up an early 3-run home run with two outs and that kind of set us back on our heels. We did, however, shut them down over the last two innings and I was happy about that."

Schrewer has signed a letter of intent to play Division 1 ball at Stanford next year.

VanLathen took the loss against the Falcons, giving up 5 runs off 7 hits and fanning 6 batters.

"I am pleased with the way the girls are playing," Gregory said. "We are looking forward to the start of regular season against Davis on the road Tuesday."

Moses Lake will host Davis Friday a 4 p.m., and then are out of action for spring break. The Chiefs will resume play at home against the Sunnyside Grizzlies April 9 at 5 p.m.

Spring Break Camp

Gregory, along with Moses Lake Parks and Recreation will be conducting a softball camp for girls ages 6-13 April 1- 3 from noon to 2 p.m.

Interested participants can sign up through Parks and Rec or at Larson Field the first day of the camp.
