MOSES LAKE - Big Bend Community College students Cynthia Beatty, of Moses Lake, and Jordan Brzezny, of Ephrata, were among 65 community and technical college students named to the All-Washington Academic Team. The honorees were recognized in a ceremony in Olympia recently.

The All-Washington team recognizes community involvement as well as academic achievement, said Doug Sly, the college's public relations officer. The two received $500 scholarships, sponsored by KeyBank, and Beatty received a $250 scholarship sponsored by the Washington State Employees Credit Union.

Beatty returned to college to pursue a degree in psychology and graduated at the end of winter quarter. She has since transferred to Western Washington University to complete the psychology degree. She had been out of school about 20 years.

Beatty was involved in community service projects at BBCC and ministry at the Grant County Jail. Her goal is to become a licensed clinical psychologist. She was president of the college's Phi Theta Kappa chapter and maintained a 3.98 grade point average.

Brzezny is a full-time Running Start student pursing a degree in biology. He plays in the Ephrata High School jazz band and is a member of the high school's math and tennis teams.

The All-Washington program is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges. Potential members are nominated on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, community activities and work experience.
