Surging soy, U.S. dollar quotes highlight Friday futures trading

Resurgent soybeans pulled corn higher Friday. Prospects for good early-November harvest weather and today’s big U.S. dollar jump pushed corn futures lower around midsession Friday. However, talk of extreme short-term tightness apparently powered the soy complex higher once again, which then pulled corn upward as well. December corn futures closed up 2.75 cents at $3.7675/bushel Friday, while May added 2.25 to $3.98.

Surging U.S. dollar values weighed on ag markets Friday morning

The surging dollar may be undercutting commodities. The soy complex remained generally strong Friday morning, but that support couldn’t keep the grain markets from sliding. Prospects for good harvest may be weighing on corn but today’s big U.S. dollar jump is very likely depressing the commodity markets, particularly those with big export exposure. December corn futures slumped 3.25 cents to $3.7075/bushel late Friday morning, while May lost 4.0 to $3.9175.

Bolyard will do a good job

Dani Bolyard is the best choice to represent Washington's 13th legislative district in Olympia. Here's one reason why.

October 31, 2014 6 a.m.

Newhouse is the man for the job

The election is nearly upon us. I have followed many elections in my lifetime and find the 4th District Congressional race the most distressing. There is,in my opinion, really only one sane and reasonable man for the job and that is Dan Newhouse. While his opponent can't do too much damage in one term he can make central Washington a laughingstock. You might want to consider NO rational state Republican is willing to endorse him. Former Republican Senator Gorton has even formed a pac to defeat Mr Didier. Former Representative Doc Hastings as well as Representative Sid Morrison as well as the NRA refuse to endorse Mr Didier. Closer to home even our local State Representatives refuse to endorse Mr Didier. This should tell us all something about Mr Didier. Please vote for Dan Newhouse and leave the conspiracy theories and hate behind. Dan Newhouse will bring us rational and reasonable representation.

Didier took the high road.

The Dan Newhouse campaign has taken the withdrawal of Clint Didier's lawsuit to claim some kind of victory and called the suit baseless and frivolous. In fact, the basis for the suit was absolute fact, as the Director of the Washington State Potato Commission, Chris Voigt admitted. Clint filed the suit to stop that illegal activity and in that he succeeded. Clint also knew that in the long haul suing an organization that represents many of his friends and neighbors was a no-win situation. He took the high road and withdrew the very justifiable lawsuit after it had accomplished its goal of shutting down Mr Voigt. I'm sure we'll hear more from the WA State elections commission on this matter later.

Vote no on 594

594 is far too invasive of our right of privacy. If you want to borrow or loan a gun to a friend to go hunting you must make a loan through a gun dealer, pay the gun dealer a fee (set by the gun dealer), register the firearm and pay for a background check. A failure to comply is a crime. This is stupid and has nothing to do with stopping criminals from securing guns. If a criminal wants a gun he will just steal it from you. Vote no on 594.

Didier is the right choice

The Fourth Congressional District seat election has presented an interesting twist, the top two vote-getters in the primary have advanced to the general election regardless of party. Clint Didier and Dan Newhouse, both Republicans, are engaged in a fierce campaign that has pitted two candidates in an unprecedented same party general election race. This is important in that whoever is elected to replace Doc Hastings is likely to remain in office for a long period of time. Hastings has won the last 10 elections and would have certainly won again.

Reader: vote for Tom Dent

Tom Dent is currently running for our 13th District representative for the state of Washington. Because of elections and serendipity, I have been gifted the blessing to get to spend an enormous amount time with the Dent family. I just wanted to let the public know, how much I genuinely appreciate and love that family. They are some of the kindest, caring, and funniest people God has created. When I told them about the museum crisis regarding our annual holiday fundraiser, so we can be able to afford the craft supplies for our Family Fun Saturdays, (every first Saturday of the month, from 12-2, that hosts between 100-200 children), Dayna Dent selflessly jumped in to help. When I told them about the daily unbearable pain every time my heart beats, because I miss my children so much, they wiped away my tears, held me, prayed with me, reassured me, "Don't worry we will find a way," and further said, "Remember who loves you." This family really cares about others. They have such a great sense of humor and are always laughing, smiling and lifting others spirits. Tom is a really hard worker. In my 30-plus years of political experience. I have never seen a candidate spend so much time personally door belling and/or make so many calls, just to encourage people to vote. I just want to encourage the public to please turn in your ballot, and vote Tom Dent as our 13th District representative because he worked hard to earn this position and he deserves it. Also, please re-elect Angus Lee for prosecutor.

October 31, 2014 6 a.m.

Why we need to vote

Only if the American public was totally brainwashed by propaganda would it elect a President who would attempt to destroy this country. The President's greatest duty is to the protection of this country: against terrorist and military threats, against invasion by infectious diseases, against major threats to the economy and "American way of life." Only a totally uninformed public would elect (or re-elect) corrupt representatives who seek only power and wealth.

Didier will support gun rights

If Dan Newhouse is pro-gun as he wants us to believe; why did he refuse to answer the "National Association for Gun Rights" questionnaire? And will Mr. Newhouse, being supported by our Congressman Doc Hastings, vote for "Anti-Gun Rights?" As did Congressman Doc Hastings? We would guess so! Little by little our Second Amendment Rights are being taken from us. We have known the Didier family for many years. We did a lot of traveling with Clint's parents; Alice and the late Don Didier; going to farm conventions in many states. The whole family is very Christian, patriotic, and honest and are a decent, loving American family. Clint Didier will support our gun rights as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. Please vote for Clint Didier.

Respect for the law and the role of a prosecutor

I'm writing this to encourage voters in Grant County to vote for Garth Dano for prosecutor. Do not consider this an endorsement, as I have no idea how Mr. Dano would perform in that office. But I do think that Grant County deserves a better reputation in the state of Washington than it currently has. This is not a referendum on Angus Lee as a person, as he seems to be a nice family man and is a highly-decorated and esteemed member of our armed forces, but that doesn't make you a good fit to head the justice system of Grant County. Garth Dano, as a lifelong defense attorney, would bring a balanced perspective of the justice system into a role that could desperately benefit from it.

Dano has owned up to mistakes

I have been especially interested in the county prosecutor's race for the past couple of months. Initially I wasn't sure who I would vote for. Recent events have finally persuaded me to vote for Garth Dano.

Same Old Story

Every two years at election time we get to hear the Democrat Party throw out all their lies about Republicans and conservatives. It is very sad to witness their usual attempt to scare voters and sway them to vote for liberals and progressives, but that's their playbook, we expect it. It's always the same thing: conservatives hate grandma and will starve her, they want to take your Social Security, Medicare, and school lunch program, and of course they have waged war against women. However what is even sadder than the Democrat lies and smears is when an establishment Republican attacks another Republican with similar scare stories just to maintain power! Dan Newhouse believes he is the heir apparent for our House seat and this justifies his smear campaign against Clint Didier. Don't believe his lies! Vote for the man with integrity and ethics who will truly represent the people, not just the big corporate donors and party establishment. That man is Clint Didier, a true patriot!

Surging soy prices sparked a broad crop-market advance Wednesday

The soy complex continued pulling crop prices higher Wednesday. The corn harvest may have been slightly delayed by the latest Corn Belt weather system, but there’s little doubt it’s advancing rapidly. Nevertheless, CBOT futures rose again today as talk of torrid soy demand sent that complex higher (and pulled the other crop markets upward in concert). Sliding soy meal futures took starch out of crop markets Tuesday

Corn futures set back in concert with soybeans. Soybeans and meal led the crop markets sharply higher Monday night and Tuesday morning, with bulls apparently banking on robust demand and slow harvests to power prices higher. However, the surge ran out of momentum and bullish profit-taking and fresh selling greatly reduced the gains. Corn did close slightly higher. December corn futures ended Tuesday having gained 1.5 cents to $3.645/bushel, while May added 1.25 to $3.8675.

Tuesday's early meal reversal weighed on crop markets

Talk of slow harvesting is again boosting corn futures. Soybeans and meal led the crop markets higher overnight, but have set back from their highs. However, that has done little to discourage corn bulls, who reportedly were encouraged by the persistently slow harvest. December corn futures climbed 4.75 cents to $3.6775/bushel late Monday morning, while May added 4.0 to $3.895.

Survey shows big data use increasing

A survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation shows more farmers are reaping the benefits of the latest agricultural technologies, but most remain wary of risks involved with big data collection. Fully 77.5 percent of farmers surveyed said they feared regulators and other government officials might gain access to their private information without their knowledge or permission. Nearly 76 percent of respondents said they were concerned others could use their information for commodity market speculation without their consent.

Beans and meal led the crop markets higher Monday

Soybeans and meal led the crop markets higher Monday. Ideas that today’s weekly USDA Crop Progress report will show a big increase in crop harvesting weighed on corn and bean futures Sunday night. However, daily and weekly reports confirmed extremely strong demand for beans (and probably meal), which sent those markets and the other crops higher. December corn futures climbed 10.0 cents to $3.63/bushel at their Monday settlement, while May added 10.25 to $3.855.

Private, personal lives being used as political pawns

I remember well the day my father, Garth Dano, called me and said, "Nicole, I'm thinking about running against Angus Lee for the position of county prosecutor. How do you feel about that?" He, in fact, made several phone calls that day; to each one of his kids. He cared about how each of us might handle the stress of our very private and very personal lives being used as political pawns in a hurtful and damaging game that he knew his opponent, Mr. Lee, would play. The good news is that our father simply won't play it. Nor will any of his children.

Clint Didier has what it takes to 'turn us around'

America is being destroyed by the radical far left. The philosophy of Saul Alinsky and Cloward - Piven have taken over our Universities, our News Media and even our Executive branch of Government. Federal bureaucracies run rough shod over our nation ruling by bureaucratic orders so outrageous as do be dictatorial. Our Constitutional Republican form of government has been replaced by a Democracy and the democratic mob happily elects and re-elects the leftist radicals. They ignore our Constitution and our Bill of Rights and promise more and more from the treasury. We fall deeper and deeper into debt and the promises of more shared wealth continue to come. Meanwhile the Republican Party, that should be the opposition to this radical socialist agenda is run by moderates who seem oblivious to the destruction and barely hold the line when they are in power. Inevitably when the left returns to power we move further and further left.

Reader: Garth Dano admits mistakes

When a man makes a "mistake" and mans up to his "mistakes," people can and will forgive this man. Garth Dano always mans up to his mistakes, he never uses excuses and takes full "responsibility" for his action. So what if he got speeding tickets in the past? In my hometown in Florida many off-duty police officers have gotten speeding tickets, however speeding tickets don't disqualify any man or woman from doing their job. No one is "perfect" but when we take full responsibility for our action, that speaks value of us. Thank you Garth Dano for being a stand-up man, your truthful actions will stand up for you this coming February. Mark my words.

Democrat backs Republican Tom Dent

For the first time in my adult life of 75 years, I am unable to vote for a Democrat in spite of my party alliance, which is second only to my alliance and loyalty to my country. Since I do not have that choice because my party was unable to field a candidate this year for District 13 State Representative to our legislature in Olympia, I now feel compelled to vote for the best candidate on the ballot to represent us all for that position. That would be my friend, Tom Dent, who has "paid his dues", served his party well, and will serve all his constituents fairly with wisdom and knowledge.

Clint Didier is a True Conservative

Knowing that Didier is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I was surprised to learn that NRA endorsed his opponent. I called NRA and questioned them about their endorsement. They said they are a one-issue organization. They only look at the candidate's voting record on gun issues. Didier has not held office and has no voting record. However, they had endorsed him in earlier campaigns because he was running against a known anti-gun candidate. I asked them about other gun organizations such as the Gun Owners of America. They said the GOA only endorses conservative candidates, whereas NRA didn't care if they were conservative, Republican, or Democrat. I realized that NRA is not a conservative organization. Didier on the other hand is endorsed by true conservatives such as: Sarah Palin, Mark Levin, Rick Santorum, Freedom Works, the National Association for Gun Rights, and many more. I also wonder how Dan Newhouse was appointed by our former liberal Gov. Gregoire to be the Director of the Department of Agriculture. Liberals don't usually appoint conservatives to positions of leadership. Maybe Newhouse is not the conservative that he says he is. I have followed Clint's campaigns and talked with him several times over the last few years. Clint is a true conservative. And by the way if you are confused by the lies about Clint that are being spread by his opponent concerning special interest groups, Medicare, the V.A. and Social Security go to Didier4Congress and click the TRUTH button. If you are looking for a true conservative, Didier is your man!

Tom Dent is a leader

As a former County Commissioner of Kittitas County and State Representative of the 13th District I know both Tom Dent and Dani Bolyard as well as anyone in Grant County. Hands down Tom Dent is my choice for the 13th District seat this election. Tom is a man of honor who has worked hard for the people of the 13th for years. He is a uniter not a divider. His experience on and off the ranch give him a unique ability to understand the issues that face Grant County and the entire district. I don't know a more consistent conservative who can effectively bring common sense to difficult issues. There's a difference between a demagogue and a leader. Tom Dent is a leader and deserves your support.

Lee is best choice for prosecutor

While conducting more research on the competency and/or management of the Grant County Prosecutor's Office, I discovered: Angus Lee manages a 30-person staff and no one on his current staff has filed a complaint against him. They all work well together. He manages a $2.5 million dollar budget and has stayed within budget. Angus personally prosecuted well over 1,000 cases, including complex trials for the most serious crimes. He personally tries more cases annually, when compared to other elected prosecutors in the state of Washington. Angus has a 90 percent success rate for his jury trials being higher than the state average. It's pretty clear, by his successful over achievements, he is genuinely dedicated to his services as our elected prosecutor.

October 24, 2014 6 a.m.

No right to speak badly about Dano

To the readers that commented for Angus Lee you apparently aren't in court and see the truth. I've been in courts in Grant County many times and listen to so many cases. I saw a father who violated his two daughters and got three days in jail and probatio. Also a 26-year-old man with a 16 year old and got a free card don't go to jail this isn't Monopoly. They stated he would provide for her and her education. Maybe if you're the right race. They say justice is blind innocent people do go to jail. You have no right to speak badly about Garth Dano because he's running for prosecutor. Is this the only way to get voters for Angus Lee.

Closing Ice Rink Will Kill Youth Hockey Program

Because of budget shortfalls Moses Lake plans to lock local kids out of the only place they can skate within 60 miles. Unlike soccer, basketball, and wrestling, which you can play almost anywhere, hockey is a sport which requires a special surface to play on and requires specialized equipment to keep it safe and fun. Don't punish the families who have spent hundreds or thousands of dollars to keep their kids in a wholesome, outdoor, team oriented activity. The Moses Lake Youth Hockey Association (MLYHA) hasn't even been in existence for 10 years and will not be able to recover from a poor decision like this. Many dedicated volunteers have worked very hard and are still growing the program. I vividly remember the days when the hockey league requested more ice times and were willing to pay for it but the City insisted on keeping the best times available for free public skating. Hockey kids shouldn't be punished for your past decisions. Next time I see the City wasting resources to clear off snow at Lauzier Fields for a soccer game that could have been postponed and played a couple days later I will try to forget when ML killed the Youth Hockey League.

When Garth Dano asked if was OK to include my name on his list of supporters for his campaign for county prosecutor, I was both pleased and honored to grant that permission. He has run a classy, clean campaign, refusing to resort to any name calling or mud slinging, conduct which exemplifies his very effective and highly professional demeanor in courtroom situations, exhibiting skills developed and honed through hundreds of hours of hands-on trial experiences. I am confident that the citizens of Grant County would be well-served by having Garth Dano as their prosecuting attorney.

In a Boeing career that spanned 37 years and in particular as I spent the last 15 of those years in management, I became more-than-ever convinced of the wisdom of ALWAYS seeking the most capable and qualified person when hiring someone for any job. For the most part, I adhered to that premise. There was, however, a situation that happened wherein I strayed from that proven ideal. It happened when I ended up hiring a woman to be an instructor/curriculum developer who had never done any of that kind of work, but who made an excellent presentation of her speaking ability. It was clever and caught my attention. Against the recommendations of my co-interviewers, I hired her. It was one of the worst decisions of my career at Boeing. She never did pan out or perform on the job as brilliantly as she had performed at the interview and eventually we had to get rid of her.

Let's not destroy our Second Amendment

I-594 is the latest and most comprehensive attempt to restrict the rights of law-abiding Washington state firearm owners. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has committed 50 million dollars to help fuel anti-gun efforts across the nation. They claim it is to close background loopholes for people buying guns on the internet and at gun shows. How can it take 18 pages to close a background loophole?

Support candidates responsibly, legally and respectfully

To all the support thugs who think it's ok to destroy, remove or otherwise sabotage political signs. IT'S A CRIME, CRIMINAL OFFENSE punishable by prison time! Don't you know that your actions reflect directly on the person you are supporting by committing these crimes. Since you supposedly work for the candidate this also makes the candidate liable for your actions. I'm not pointing any fingers, but a sign at Naylor junction supporting Angus Lee "mysteriously" disappeared and a large sign supporting Garth Dano "magically" appeared in it's place. Upon closer observation I found the Angus Lee sign on the ground behind Dano's sign and all the zip ties had been clipped. Hmmm... methinks foul actions are afoot... I replaced Angus Lee's sign, leaving Dano's sign intact, not wanting to stoop to the level of these thug supporters. I urge EVERYONE to keep their eyes open for this illegal activity and to report it to the authorities immediately. If you can get a license number or phone picture, all the better. I urge everyone to support the candidate of their choice, but please do it responsibly, legally and respectfully.

Corn futures are rallying Tuesday morning. Prospects for fine Midwest weather for harvesting through the end of the month may be limiting gains, but bulls are probably being joined by technicians. December corn futures rebounded 6.5 cents to $3.5475/bushel late Tuesday morning, while May climbed 6.5 to $3.77.

Moves in livestock futures bracketed those of the crop markets

Corn futures posted a firm Monday close. Forecasts for benign harvest weather and a disappointing result on the weekly USDA Export Inspections report weighed on corn futures to start the week. However, CBOT prices staged a late comeback, which probably reflected the slow harvest pace to this point, short-covering and to technical support around current levels. December corn futures settled 0.25 cent higher at $3.4825/bushel Monday afternoon, while May inched up 0.5 to $3.705.

October 18, 2014 6 a.m.

Angus Lee, a better voice

In the Columbia Basin Herald's Oct. 14 article, Mr. Dano was quoted as saying that the 17 traffic tickets he has been issued should not matter in the election for prosecutor. I could not disagree more. To me, they speak volumes about the man. I think that he comes across as arrogant and self important. Apparently he feels the laws do not apply to him but only to "lesser" beings. I know the type of person I would like to see as prosecutor and he is not it. A vote for Angus Lee would be a much better choice.

October 18, 2014 6 a.m.

A message from the 'Democratic underground'

Hello Republicans, this is from a member of the Democratic underground in the Columbia Basin. Yes we are out here, more of us than you think. Unfortunately we choose to stay underground so our signs don't get stolen, or our windows busted or just plain yelled at because of our politics. It's hard to believe that with all the backstabbing going on between Didier and Newhouse, and Dano and Lee, that I would even consider voting for any of you. Is this how you are going to act in D.C. and the courtroom? I hate to use the word pathetic, but it is what it is. As one of your constituents, I want some answers, not just right wing talking points. What are you going to replace my Affordable Health Care with? I am really underemployed since getting let go from a 15-year job two years ago. I need my health insurance. What about minimum wage, unemployment extensions, passing an infastructure jobs bill, tax breaks to the super wealthy (i.e. big oil and pharmacy), passing a background check on your precious guns, climate change, and the big one, would you vote to get us into another war and how are you going to pay for it? These are just a few issues but there are many more. And just to lighten this up a but, what do you all think of letting farmers grow hemp again, one of the most versatile crops on the planet. I can just see a hamp sock factory going up on Wheeler Road, lots of jobs, tax money and save the planet. Win, win, win.

I support Tom Dent

I have spent the majority of this last spring and summer traveling and campaigning for Tom Dent to become the next 13th District state representative. We have traveled to every city and town in the 13th District area for every festival, county fair, parade and appreciation day. As we have traveled I noticed that there is a central gathering place for the residents of the areas, where there is always really good food to be enjoyed. As we have enjoyed these functions Tom always seeks out groups of people, tells them who he is and why he is there and then does something very very important, he listens to them intently. This is the kind of candidate that Tom is and this is the kind of representative that he will be in Olympia. He will listen to the people who elect him so that he can represent them in the best and most efficient way that he can.

Fresh News from MarDon

Cooling weather this week has only helped the walleye, bass and perch bite on Potholes Reservoir. Jumbo crappie 12 inches and larger have been caught by many fishers trolling at the mouth of Crab Creek and the face of the sand dunes. Our water level continues to rise two to three inches a day. Sand dune bass fishers are beginning to report good largemouth action from the Crab Creek Area, Goose Island, and the face of O'Sullivan Dam. The Lind Coulee is also showing some nice smallmouth bass action. Blade Baits are still producing walleye limits for boaters from many different areas on Potholes Reservoir.

Dry conditions slow deer hunting success

The deer numbers seem to be lacking in my hunting territory and the dry conditions seem to be the culprit. A Fish and Wildlife enforcement officer relayed a lack of deer taken opening weekend, even though a sizeable number of hunters have been checked. He also said there seems to be fewer hunters in the field than usual.

Done with politics as usual

"Proven Leadership" is the slogan being thrown around this season. Candidates telling us that we should vote for them, because it's "all about relationships." To me that says a candidate will play Let's Make a Deal when they get into office, and I'm not interested in anymore politics as usual. I am interested in a candidate who will listen to the people in their district, and be our mouthpiece. I'm not interested in being led by a politician who gets their pockets lined by their "relationships." I'm interested in someone who is there to restore this country to the values, and freedom generations before got to enjoy.

Most ag markets ended the week rather poorly

Traders cited harvest pressure for Friday’s crop market weakness. Corn futures acted surprisingly well Thursday night, but followed soybeans lower as Friday passed. Prices fell despite early news of a big sale and a huge total on the weekly USDA Export Sales report. Wire service sources cited fresh harvest pressure and bullish profit-taking for the losses. December corn futures ended Friday having fallen 4.25 cents to $3.48/bushel, while May sagged 4.25 to $3.70.

So called "gun control" bills are not intended to contain and control criminals. They are not intended to protect honest people. They are not intended to reduce violence, murder, rape, thefts, home invasions nor any other crimes committed by people using a gun for that purpose. Gun control laws are intended solely to reduce the number of guns and gun owners in this country.

Dani Bolyard communicates well

We have two good Republican candidates for the open 13th LD seat, both former Grant County Republican chairman, both dedicated to Republican values, both with business and agriculture experience. I will be voting for Dani Bolyard.

October 17, 2014 6 a.m.

Character matters

I have been involved in Republican politics since 1980. During that time I have been 100 percent sure about two candidates who had to be elected at the time they were running, Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984 for President and Clint Didier for US House of Representatives now. Just like President Reagan, Clint Didier is a Constitutional conservative who believes government is not the solution to all of our problems, it is the reason for our problems! If we elect another career politician who just wants to go along to get along, we are surely doomed. Dan Newhouse is an establishment "party first" politician who can't wait to vote for "comprehensive immigration reform" (amnesty) to reward his corporate agriculture supporters. He recently stated at a candidates forum that he was tired of dealing with "coyotes" when hiring his orchard employees. George Ciccotte, who was a candidate in the primary, recently endorsed Clint Didier because of his high ethical standards and because he will represent us, not the corporate donors and the party leaders. The choice should be very obvious.

Dani Bolyard, fulfilling duties with integrity

As Amercians we have rights - speech, press, assembly, bear arms, equal justice and own private property. We also have much loved and appreciated freedoms - travel, work, marry, education and selection of a political party. For the last eight years I have had the opportunity to serve in various capacities in the Grant County Republican Party. We are fortunate to have such dedicated people helping elect and hold accountable those who serve to uphold our constitution. I have worked closely in public and behind the scenes with both candidates for 13 District Representative. I can tell you first hand they are both very passionate about their endeavor. Dani Bolyard has gained respect statewide for her honest and candid approach to platforms and issues. She has fought hard to protect our lands and water and she has fought against over regulation. She is well educated, faithful and very knowledgable about the issues at hand. Thank you to all those that serve. I encourage you to visit with both Dani Bolyard (www.daniforrep.com) and her opponent before you vote in November.

Letter writer apologizes to former sheriff

I'd like to thank this newspaper for providing me the space to make the most public apology I can. In a recent letter written by me and printed in this section I mentioned a man's name, a very good man. The brevity of my reference and my bone-headed choice of words, to some were seen to be meant as a veiled slight to the man. And by extension, an offence to his entire family and countless friends who know him and love him. There was no such intent on my part and I hope I can clarify that here.

Keep Grant County finances in good hands

The most important qualification to be Grant County's Treasurer is financial education and experience. The write-in candidate, who barely squeaked into the general election challenging our Grant County Treasurer, hasn't provided any information on why he's qualified for the job. When asked, he deflects the question by saying he's going to "bring service back". But, the things he claims he's going to do aren't even duties of the Treasurer.

I can proudly say, I have known Tom Dent for nearly his entire life. We became friends in elementary school and have continued to be friends for the last five decades. Although I no longer live in Washington State, I have watched Tom through the years as he has pursued his dreams and passions. He is a person who has a positive impact wherever he serves or whatever he sets his mind to accomplish! As a young man, he was always true to his word and was someone you could trust. He is the same to this day. Although calm and

Tom Dent's mission and platform is very clear to me. His wide views of the concerns we face in the 13th District, like water, agriculture, family and health care, not to mention, education funding solutions and small business, are very important issues for the citizens. With his leadership skills and his ability to work with the opposition, I believe he has the intergity, energy and experience it takes to be heard in Olympia. That is why I'm voting for Tom Dent for 13th District representative, Position 1.

Run a clean campaign

What is it about an election that brings out the sleazeballs, the dishonest, the bullies, the mean spirited, and those who act like they are still in junior high? In the words of the late Joan Rivers, "Oh, grow up!" Apparently when one can't beat one's opponent honestly then bring on the personal crucifixions! Personal attacks only show me that these individuals are afraid to examine their own lives and own up to their own transgressions or have such a high and mighty opinion of themselves that they believe they are perfect and thus justified in being judge and jury of everyone else-or at least their opponent. Of course the red herring can work, but I would hope that any thinking individual can see through the subterfuge and realize that these people are only trying to detract from the real issues, their inexperience, ineptitude and/or poor job performance. Who is the only candidate who has run a clean campaign with zero personal attacks? Who is the only candidate who has run a campaign on the issues?

Large stock market losses depressed commodities Wednesday

Big equity losses weighed on the ag markets Wednesday. Tuesday’s weekly USDA Crop Progress indicated the corn harvest was farther along than expected, which weighed on CBOT futures in early trading. However, today’s late corn weakness probably exemplified a bearish commodity reaction to big losses in the equity markets, since those imply a weak demand outlook. December corn futures dropped 9.5 cents to $3.475/bushel at their Wednesday close, while May slumped 9.5 cents to $3.695.

When John Knodell resigned as Grant County Prosecutor the latter part of 2008, the county commissioners had a large task on their hands. This was only during the interim, until the next official election.

Big equity losses are weighing on the ag markets. The weekly USDA Crop Progress indicated the corn harvest was farther along than expected, which weighed on CBOT futures in early trading. VOTE GARTH DANO

Non-controversial prosecutor

I yearn for the days when Grant County had a mature, experienced, and non-controversial prosecutor like John Knodell. The current prosecutor is lacking in all areas, and is costing taxpayers dearly.

October 15, 2014 6 a.m.

VOTE GARTH DANO

Consider him when voting

We support Garth Dano for prosecutor, and would like to ask you to consider him when voting. Our decision is based in a large part by knowing a person who was in law enforcement, and also one  who was a deputy prosecutor, and decided not to work with the current prosecutor. These things, and listening to the candidates, and other considerations, have helped us come to this decision.  We also believe Garth has a wealth of experience in the practice of law in this county, and having worked with several prosecuting attorneys, has formed good ideas about how the office of prosecutor should function for the people of Grant County.

TFI: Cover crops add to farms' sustainability

A potentially record-setting U.S. corn harvest is underway. Many farmers can attribute the use of cover crops as one of multiple best management practices (BMPs) that help them increase yield year after year. Combined with BMPs of The Fertilizer Institute's 4R Nutrient Stewardship program that promotes the application of nutrients at the right source, right rate, right time and right place, farmers further ensure top production.

Livestock markets posted disparate reactions to the USDA data

Corn futures suffered a belated bearish reaction to Friday’s USDA data. Corn had declined in concert with soybeans prior to the release of today’s 11:00 AM CDT release of the USDA’s Crop Production and Supply/Demand (WASDE) reports. The data were construed as somewhat supportive since most numbers fell slightly below average forecasts, but CBOT corn futures turned decidedly lower as the noon hour loomed. December corn futures fell 6.25 cents to $3.385/bushel late Friday morning, while May slid 1.5 to $3.60.

M&Ms and the American Dream

GUEST EDITORIAL

Entrepreneurs helped make America great. Many of the "big businesses" we know today started in the imaginations of immigrants who came to America, the land of opportunity - a place of boundless possibilities where your station in life didn't matter, a land where hard work, innovation and perseverance held the key to the American dream.

Dano has the skills and experience

My grandfather Paul Klasen was Grant County's Prosecuting Attorney for 36 years. I always admired the way he put the interests of the County first, was a strong advisor to our commissioners, and never politicized his office. He was also a tremendous mentor, using his experience to develop a lot of successful young prosecutors over the years. Grandpa always spoke very highly of Garth Dano as an attorney. I have known Garth all my life, and believe he has the skills and experience necessary to be outstanding prosecutor for our County. I invite you to cast your vote for Garth Dano this November.

Small business owner thanks Lee

I'm grateful to see our Prosecuting Attorney, Angus Lee, running again for another term. My husband and I had a small business in Moses Lake a few years back. Angus Lee was so supportive of small business owners. Insufficient fund checks were always an issue. Therefore, it is difficult to make a profit. Angus was always supportive in this area to help small business.

Living within a budget

Received our letter in the mail from City of Moses Lake. To help cover their budget shortfall they are going to pillage and plunder the discount for seniors on sanitation rates, no more discounts unless you are really low income. It seems like the only people who are on fixed income are the ones they can easily take from. County taxes go up, city, no more discounts, we have to live within our budgets, why can't they? We are writing as two fixed income seniors from Moses Lake.

"Tom is our best choice"

Voters in the 13th district face an atypical situation in the race for State Representative this year: both candidates prefer the Republican Party. This is actually a blessing, since we cannot blindly choose the candidate with the (R) or the (D) behind the name. We must dig deep and study hard in order to pick the best advocate for us in Olympia. Both my research and personal experiences point to Tom Dent.

Dano's experience will help fight crime

I was raised and have lived most of my adult life in Ephrata. I have known Garth Dano for almost thirty years. It's not often that we have an opportunity to elect a non politician so uniquely qualified at a time the county needs are matched perfectly to a candidate's experiences and skill sets; I am excited to support Garth Dano for Grant County Prosecutor.

Nobody is above the law

We are all human beings. Some think others are better than others, even those that are to protect and serve. Nobody is above the law. We all bleed the same color and when we dress we put our pants on one leg at a time. We come from different cultures, we're labeled by authorities. They say the land of opportunity, but for who? People out there know the truth about so many cases. Nobody is perfect, even those with a badge who protects one from those paid to protect citizens. Nobody believed Rodney King until it was world wide. Only we the people can make a difference, so register and vote city officials that listen to citizens and not to one side because they wear a badge.

Now is the time to plan your 2015 weed control

With a chill in the air that feels all too much like autumn is upon us already, it's a great reminder that the 2014 growing season is coming towards its conclusion. Most farmers who harvest small grain have it in the bin already, and the straw is packed neatly in sheds and bunkers. As we are preparing to harvest that last cutting of alfalfa and then on to silage and corn grain, it's easy to get caught up in the busyness that is farming to put off planning for 2015 until the combine is parked in the shed. However, now is a great time to get started planning for next year's cropping decisions – and weed control is a very important part of that picture.

Ag markets moved almost universally higher Monday morning

Export Inspections probably encouraged bulls Monday morning. Rainfall over the central U.S. is likely to slow the U.S. fall harvest rather significantly, thereby potentially reducing yields. The frost that hit the central Plains over the weekend also raised quality concerns. The strong results on the Export Inspections report are also encouraging buying. December corn futures climbed 6.75 cents to $3.30/bushel late Monday morning, while May added 6.75 to $3.5175.

Hog markets led cattle lower on Friday

Grain futures remained surprisingly stable Friday. Strong employment data and mixed economic numbers boosted stocks and sent the U.S. dollar soaring Friday morning. The fact that corn and wheat futures remained firm in the face of those moves was impressive. Bulls are crediting the storm system slowing the corn harvest and short covering. December corn futures ended the week 0.5 cent higher at $3.2325/bushel, while May added 0.75 to $3.45.

Lakeview fourth-graders pen thoughts on bullying

I am a fourth-grader at Lakeview Terrace Elementary School. I think bullying needs to stop in Moses Lake because people can get seriously hurt. So my class and I want bullying to stop in Moses Lake and in schools. We need to work together to stop bullies because being bullied is not fun at all. And some bullies think it is and funny, but it's not.

Why we need Angus Lee

Here is why we need Angus Lee as Prosecutor: Garth Dano knows how to make deals and to plea bargain but knows nothing about how to prosecute and very little about even going into the court room and conducting a trial. We can all clearly see how the fact that Angus refuses to make deals in cases involving sexual predators and other low-life has Dano and his fellow Defense attorneys, who are funding him, wanting Angus Lee out. They don't want prosecution they want plea deals. Don't let the Defense take over the Prosecutors Office and free the criminals!!

October 3, 2014 6 a.m.

Support for Angus Lee

I unhesitatingly support Angus Lee as Prosecutor. My experience with him stems from the murder of my former mother-in-law by her youngest son. Angus walked the balance of prosecuting my brother in law and championing the victim. He did so with competence, compassion, and respect.

Frustrated over the Post Office

Where does all the missing mail go? I have been in business as a landlord in Moses Lake for 25 years. Most of my property is on the base. This year, I have had 5 rent checks go missing from different tenants after they have put it in a mailbox. All but one was mailed from the base, using 3 of those boxes. It costs my tenants money to replace those money orders and then they are behind in rent until they get a refund. I have called the PostMaster of Moses Lake, who quickly did not want to take any responsibility. My envelopes that are used are bar coded for my mailing address. The boxes on the base have been broken and run down. They need to be fixed or replaced with better out-going boxes.

Angus Lee...Proven Ability and Integrity

I had the privilege of growing up in a small rural community. Term after term, I watched some unqualified candidates get elected simply because they were part of the "good old boy" system. While serving as clerk of the board of county commissioners, and later as a superior court commissioner, I was close enough to the "inner workings" to watch how damaging this policy for choosing an elected official could be. PLEASE be smart. Don't vote for someone just because they are your "buddy" or grew up here. The choice of who will be our prosecutor is far too important to be based on some kind of popularity contest. Make an informed, intelligent decision and vote for the person who is most qualified and possesses the integrity to do the job properly for the good of all Grant County residents. My choice for prosecutor, Angus Lee, is an easy one because he has proven himself and earned our respect.

Proudly voting for Bolyard

Although there are a few races in this election where I am still undecided, there is one that leaves no doubt in my mind. For House Dist. 13 the choice is a clear one because the differences between the candidates are so striking. I am proudly voting for Dani Bolyard. She really is a servant of the people. Because she believes in We the People, she has personally knocked on over 6000 doors in this district in order to listen to and talk with the people. Maybe she should have been out knocking on the doors of big businesses and raising more campaign money, but that is not who Dani is. Can she get things done in Olympia? Yes. Dani has an amazing gift and training in understanding the language of the bills and what they really mean for the people of her district. She will not support a bill that is unconstitutional. Dani is a tiger when it comes to speaking her heart & mind on the issues that she deals with. As Republican County Chairman she made needed corrections in the by-laws that gave the authority back to the PCOs as it should be instead of with herself as the chairman. I know of at least 3 opportunities where both candidates for this position were invited to voter's forums, radio interviews etc, however Dani was the only one willing to participate. But Dani would be a tough one to debate against because she is sharp and unafraid to speak the truth. It's not often we have the opportunity to vote for someone of her caliber. Check out her web site or call and talk to her personally.

Maybe ones afraid of the truth and people will start to listen. I can't make a difference alone.

Time for change

I am writing this letter in support of Garth Dano for Prosecutor. I am voting for him myself and I recommend that everyone in the area do the same. In 2012, the Washington State Bar Association filed formal disciplinary charges against our current prosecutor, accusing him of engaging in conflicts of interest and of trying to force an assistant to do the same. Bar officials said they know of no other instance in Washington where a county's top prosecutor has faced formal charges while still in office. If Lee is found to have violated ethics rules, he could face possible suspension of his law license. It is painfully obvious that it is time for a change in the Prosecutor's office and Garth Dano is the ideal candidate for that position. Garth has been practicing law since 1980. That was about the time the existing prosecutor was born. Dano is extremely qualified as prosecutor with significant experience including thousands of criminal felony and misdemeanor cases. He is an active member of the Grant County Bar Association (past president no less), the Washington Bar Association, The Washington Foundation for Criminal Justice, the Washington State Association for Justice, the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (past Governor and Vice-President) and the Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America. Please join me in voting for Garth Dano as Grant County Prosecuting Attorney.

Current prosecutor is lacking

I yearn for the days when Grant County had a mature, experienced, and non-controversial Prosecutor like John Knodell. The current prosecutor is lacking in all areas, and is costing taxpayers dearly. The current prosecutor has an ethics case before the Bar, and so far the county has spent $90,000+ in attorney's fees. There is also a $2.5 Million Lawsuit pending against the current prosecutor. Experience is gained by decades of interacting with other attorneys, plaintiffs, defendants, and judges. Garth Dano is a candidate for Grant County Prosecutor that can bring maturity, experience, and guidance to young lawyers in that office. As a taxpayer, I can no longer afford paying for the mistakes of inexperience.

Tom Dent is the best choice

Why? Why would we send any one other than Tom Dent to represent us in Olympia? He is so obviously the best choice to carry the wishes of Basin citizens to Congress. Tom is a hard worker in what ever endeavor he takes on. In politics, ranching, flying airplanes, running a successful business or raising kids and Buffalo he is always the same man. He works hard, stays true to his personal values of honesty and keeping his word. My dealings with Tom Dent have taught me that I can trust this man in business and as a friend. I support wholeheartedly his run for Washington State Representative for Legislative District 13 because I know he will not waver in his commitment to serve the people. He is dedicated to service and not self interest. His only agenda will be to carry our concerns to Olympia. He is a true blue conservative Republican and long time member and leader in the GOP in Grant County. Why not send the best to represent us? And that is without a doubt my friend Tom Dent. Please vote for Tom for Representative.

Lee's record speaks for itself

My great-granddaughter was born on Friday. She is so sweet and beautiful, and her parents are delighted that she is here, especially her mother. As I held her in my arms I found myself thinking about her future and her limitless potential as a child of God. We live in perilous times and I am concerned about the welfare of our children, and I I know that I am not alone. I frequently hear people speak of their concerns about 'our children.' Angus Lee, is also concerned about our children. He is concerned about the safety of the members of the community and he is a champion to those who have been victims of violent crime. I have a great interest in who our next prosecuting attorney will be, and after checking his record I can confidently say that I am voting for Angus Lee. Juvenile crime rates are down, gang members who break the law are being convicted and receiving stiff sentences, people who commit crimes against children are receiving guilty verdicts and stiff sentences. I don't know much about what goes on in the prosecutor's office, but I read the newspaper and I frequently read that Angus Lee is doing his job and doing it well. His record speaks for itself. Grant County is a great place to raise a family! Let's do all we can to make sure it stays that way. Our children deserve it. A vote for Angus Lee, Grant County Prosecutor, is a vote for a continued hard line on crime.

Crop markets posted another general rebound Thursday

Corn markets ended Thursday on a firm note. Although crop futures dipped again Wednesday night and Thursday’s news seemed less than supportive, they ended the day have posted moderate gains. Talk of harvest delays and financial market moves (stock rebound & dollar weakness), along with short-covering probably boosted corn prices. December corn futures closed up 1.5 cents to $3.2275/bushel Thursday, while May added 1.5 to $3.4425.
