Let's not destroy our Second Amendment

| October 24, 2014 6:00 AM

I-594 is the latest and most comprehensive attempt to restrict the rights of law-abiding Washington state firearm owners. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has committed 50 million dollars to help fuel anti-gun efforts across the nation. They claim it is to close background loopholes for people buying guns on the internet and at gun shows. How can it take 18 pages to close a background loophole?

Facts:

1. We already have background checks at all gun shows and through all dealers.

2. All internet purchases must go through a dealer.

3. Less than 1 percent of all criminals buy guns at gun shows, according to information provided by the FBI.

Initiative 594 would not prevent criminals from obtaining firearms. I-594 would not do anything to address the mental health crisis in America. Instead I-594 will:

1. Allow for universal gun registry.

2. Implement a yearly tax on all of a persons' guns based on the fair market value.

3. Make law-abiding citizens unknowingly commit misdemeanors and felonies thus allowing the bureaucracy to legally confiscate our guns.

Some of the consequences of this law are:

1. An instructor will be committing a misdemeanor if he/she allows a student to handle a gun at a Boy Scout Camp, FFA trap shoot, or a Hunter Safety Class.

2. Gifting a gun, loaning a gun, or receiving one through inheritance, requires registration and background checks. Not doing so is a misdemeanor.

3. If target practicing on someone else's property, you can't hand a gun to anyone under the age of 19 or a buddy. You will be committing a misdemeanor; do it again and it is a felony.

Please vote "No" on I-594.

In 1934 Adolf Hitler registered guns and we all know how that turned out.
