Letter writer apologizes to former sheriff

| October 17, 2014 6:00 AM

I'd like to thank this newspaper for providing me the space to make the most public apology I can. In a recent letter written by me and printed in this section I mentioned a man's name, a very good man. The brevity of my reference and my bone-headed choice of words, to some were seen to be meant as a veiled slight to the man. And by extension, an offence to his entire family and countless friends who know him and love him. There was no such intent on my part and I hope I can clarify that here.

My letter printed here on Oct. 9 states that myself and several others were barred from entry to a meeting held on private property. What was not said was how that was accomplished. Frank Detrolio was our sheriff, he acted that night the same way I've always known him to. With his usual calm and friendly nature he let us know that we would not be admitted. He was there to do his job: Keep the peace. Which he did. And we who were kept out will always respect the way Frank dealt with us. He was fair but clear, he was there to keep all of us out of needless trouble.

I have only good memories going back 50 years of knowing Frank, Charleen and Buck. I wish I could have 50 more. I would never pick up a pen again if I might offend the Detrolio name. Frank has served this country his entire life, in the Air Force, as a fireman, a cop and our sheriff. Even when he owned a gas station he was serving the public. If I caused one moment of distress or insult to anyone in the Detrolio family or to those who know and love him, I ask for forgiveness. Frank has always had my respect for many reasons and I hope I've been able to clear the air about my previous letter. The Detrolio name and the man who brought it here deserves the respect of us all.
