Dennis note: Remember the first irrigation water was turned on in 1952. To celebrate the coming of water, the towns and cities of the Columbia Basin held various events. In Moses Lake the event was FID or Farm-in-a-Day. Here are a few of the news stories leading to the FID event. Read on.
JC Tractors to plug FID
Two new farm tractors leave Moses Lake very early Thursday morning, headed for Bellingham. They'll be self-propelled all the way and each will pull a trailer containing three or four men.
The stunt is being pulled off by the Moses Lake JC's enroute to their state convention at Bellingham. They figure on leaving Thursday, stopping over night along the way and pulling into the opening convention session in style Friday afternoon.
The tractors and trailers are being decorated, painted and trimmed, to advertise Farm-in-a-Day, Moses Lake potatoes and the JC's themselves. They plan to stop at every town on the way to advertise their cause.
Arranging the stunt are Jess Cleary, Ed Nishi and Norm Woods. Nishi and Cleary will be the first drivers out, using a new Ferguson tractor from C.B. Supply and a new Ford from Moses Lake Tractor. State Patrol permission has been obtained.
