Moses Lake firefighters, Lions Club bring back Firefighters Breakfast

MOSES LAKE - Community members will be able to have breakfast with some of their local firefighters this weekend.
The Moses Lake Firefighters Local 2052 and the Moses Lake Lions Club have decided to bring back the Firefighter's Breakfast this year. It is a long-standing tradition that has been on hiatus for a couple of years, said firefighter Matt Borschowa.
"Traditionally, it was the (Moses Lake Fire Department) Volunteers Association who put this on but the last one was around 2009," he said. "This year, the firefighters are taking on the breakfast and bringing it back."
The 2014 breakfast is scheduled from 6 to 11 a.m. Saturday, and will be held at the Moses Lake Fire Station No. 1, 701 E. Third Ave.
In the past, the breakfasts have included a silent auction, but Borschowa said they decided not to do one this year. Instead, the focus is on having a good breakfast and having a good time getting to know their firefighters, he said.
"We just want to get people here so they can get to know us and what we do and be able to talk with us," he said. "It's a big meet and greet for us."
On-duty firefighters will be giving station tours and showing their various gear and equipment during the event as well, as long as no emergency calls come in, said Borschowa.
He said some of the proceeds from the breakfast will go to Operation Warm, which provides coats for kids in need.
Since they're hosting the breakfast with the Lions Club, some of the proceeds will also go to charity projects of their choosing.
Lions member Dave Dollarhide said the organization puts emphasis on funding projects that help those with sight and hearing problems.
"We do things like purchase prescription eye glasses and hearing aids for the needy," he said.
The Lions also host a summer camp for kids with diabetes and have in the past helped communities affected by natural disasters.
Dollarhide said Lions Club members will take care of the preparation and the cooking of the breakfast. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, hash browns and sausage.
There will also be juice and coffee, he said.
Breakfast is $8 per person for those 12 years of age and older and $5 for those ages 3-12. Breakfast is free for children younger than 3.
Families of up to five people can pay $25.
