Betty Mae Wider
Betty Mae Wider passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 due to illness. Betty was born in July of 1931, the oldest of four children of Veryl and Floyd Robertson in the Shingobee Township of Minnesota. During her childhood she spent a lot of her time with her Grandmother Wakefield and learned as she put it "the important things in life" and her Native American heritage. Betty always told her family "she loved a man with a motorcycle" so it was no surprise she married Austin in August of 1950 and moved to Moses Lake in the spring of 1959. Betty enjoyed square dancing , bowling, knitting, crocheting , reading and was a great cook! She rarely met a stranger she did not speak to. Betty remained married to Austin until his death in June of 2008. Betty is survived by two daughters, Dorinda Wider and Colleen Hazel (Gary), two grandsons Jeremy Hazel, and Nicholas Hazel (Megan), and two great grandchildren, Jordynn Hazel (father, Jeremy) and Owen Hazel (father, Nicholas) and longtime family friend and "corner child", Ida Baltikauskas. Betty will always be remembered for her smile and laughter! At her request there will be no services.

Former Sonico employee addresses move
I was previously employed by Sonico in Moses Lake, Washington (1999-2004) and because I no longer live in the area, only today did I learn of the Sonico move and the issues with building 408. I worked at Sonico during 9/11 and although the economy had plummeted greatly as a result of this tragedy and its subsequent major impact on the airline and aerospace industries, the Perdue family did their utmost best to keep everyone on staff employed with a living wage. I know people who are still employed by Sonico, a local company in business for over three decades in Grant County. It is my hope for the Perdues and all of their employees the Port will allow Sonico enough time to relocate, whether by building a new location or finding an existing local property with the space they need to continue working. This is a complicated issue but in these tough economic times where available jobs are few and far between, I strongly urge the Port of Moses Lake Commissioners to carefully consider the potentially devastating financial impact of their actions regarding Sonico's location and those in Sonico's employ.

Growing grain and hay, as well as tending chickens, pigs, cattle and horses filled his daily life; skills which would later prove useful in his own adult life. When the daily chores were done, school work and lessons needed finishing. However, in the summer with school out, the Meacham children would often ride their horses, racing against the neighbors' horses, or visit the nearby strawberry and/or melon patches for delicious after supper snacks.

Fresh News From MarDon
The water on Potholes Reservoir has come alive. Our surface water temperatures have begun to eclipse the 70 degree mark. Shore fishers have been commenting on seeing vast numbers of both small mouth bass and largemouth bass cruising the shoreline to locate their spawning areas to prepare for their annual spring detail. The water under the MarDon Fishing Dock is visibly filled with several age classes of Yellow Perch, it looks like an aquarium. Serious bass anglers competing in the The Bass Federation Northwest Qualifier are weighing in largemouth and small mouth bass over 6 lbs. The comment that makes me so happy is how many bass federation fishers never having fished Potholes Reservoir are not only catching the largest smallmouth bass but they are also witnessing vast schools of crappie, bluegill, and perch throughout the 18,000 square acre sand dune area. Our warm water fishing on Potholes Reservoir is showing increased populations.

Reader weighs in on Sonico move
I have worked at Sonico for over 20 years. I don't know what happened to Bldg 408 (hangar) that would make it unsafe. The POML had Bldg 408 inspected in 1998 and found some kind of defect or damage, which wasn't from anything we did. The POML now has a concern for public safety and wants Sonico out of the hangar. I work in Bldg 408 and do not consider it unsafe. I have never been afraid of it falling down. It is my understanding that the building was built to withstand hurricane force winds. It has passed that test of time. We have been searching for a location within a 20 mile range for months. The Perdues have had dreams and goals for Sonico. They have dreamed of building their own building. I also that in the last 20+ years when the economy plummeted twice (during 9/11 incident and when the stock market crashed) the Perdues have gone above and beyond to keep their employees working. They have consistently employed 40+ people and supported the community. Sonico has been in the hangar for 33 years. The building we need is substantial. In case you haven't heard, we are looking for a 35,000 square foot facility. Since we will have to move out of Bldg 408 (hangar) we will also have to move out of Bldg 429, which is home for most of the administrative personnel. To move the equipment, parts, and everything else will take a substantial amount of time. We have over 65,000 line items of parts. This is not a task someone wants to do multiple times. I would appreciate it if the Port of Moses Lake Commissioners would allow Sonico enough time to locate or construct a suitable building to move to.

Sonico employee asks POML to gather facts
The POML states "they are acting on public safety concerns" when attempting to justify kicking Sonico out of Bldg. 408. The structural defects that exist in 408 have been there for 15 years, probably longer, but the fact remains the POML has known about these defects for 15 years, yet there was never a concern for public safety until now?

She is grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren (including baby on the way would make it 11) and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Kyle and her grandson Mark. She moved from Mount Vernon after Kyle's death to Ephrata, Washington and then to Moses Lake. She spent the last years of her life at Hearthstone Assisted Living where she found a new side of herself. She wrote poems and short stories and even had a poem published.
