Bike law may take away liberty

| May 17, 2013 6:00 AM

I am an American that believes in liberty. The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights was written so I cannot be denied my "life, liberty or property without due process." (Fourth Amendment to the Bill of Rights) Governments do not give us these rights, they can only take them away.

I love Moses Lake for many of the freedoms we have here. I also respect the rights of other people's opinions. I believe it is my right to decide rather or not my kids wear bike helmets.

My issue is not the helmet but my rights. Seat belt laws started this way. First only kids had to wear seatbelts, then adults and then came stopping and ticketing people if they were not wearing them.

I worry about laws that governments institute in the name of my kid's safety. What law does our city institute next? Outlaw trans fat in resturants or any soda over 16 ounces?; because they are bad for us. Sounds crazy but it has happened in other cities.

I love Grant County and respect the elected leaders. I just hope they keep our liberties in mind when making decisions.
