Stanwood family killed in crash near George
Two SUVs collided near George Sunday, killing a Stanwood family of four.
GEORGE - A Stanwood, Wash. family of four died Sunday morning in a crash near George.
About 8 a.m. Sunday, emergency personnel responded to Beverly-Burke Road North and Road 1 Northwest north of George for a two-vehicle collision involving an older model Chevrolet Tahoe and a Kia Sportage SUV, according to the sheriff's office.
The two vehicles collided at the intersection, sending the Tahoe off the road, through a guardrail and continuing a short distance into a full and flowing irrigation canal. The Tahoe was submerged in the canal and pulled downstream about 100 yards before stopping. Rescuers were able to remove the four family members from the Tahoe.
Gabriel Ochoa, 35, and Dioselina Buenrostro, 33, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two girls, Yesenia "Jessie," 4 and Sandra Ochoa, 9, were given CPR on the scene and transported to Quincy Valley Medical Center in Quincy where they died a short time later, according to the sheriff's office.
The female driver of the Kia SUV suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital. The driver's name was not released.
The Tahoe was later towed out of the canal. The road was closed for traffic for several hours as the Grant County Sheriff's Motor Traffic Unit investigated.
"In my 21 years in law enforcement, this is the most tragic, single incident I have ever been to," Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones said. "My heart is filled with sorrow and I pray for peace and comfort for the surviving family members."
The Grant County Coroner's Office will conduct autopsies and release the victims' cause of death at a later time.
Grant County Fire District 3, Protection 1 and the State Patrol assisted in the incident.
