MATTAWA - The Wahluke High School walking and nutrition class will host its third annual Walk for Diabetes on Saturday May 11.

"The community of Mattawa is invited to participate in this event," organizer and teacher Adrea Bezdicek said. "Our goal is to raise $2,000."

The Walk for Diabetes is 5 kilometers or 3.26 miles long. All money raised through donations, pledges and registration will be donated to local clinics to be used for diabetic patients in Mattawa.

Diabetes is the fifth leading killer of Grant County residents, according to the Grant County Health Department.

The walk will have one start time this year, at 9 a.m., at the Wahluke High School Track. However participants can walk anytime they want between the hours of 9-1.

The 3.26-mile event starts at the track and winds through apple orchards, wine vineyards, overlooks the town of Mattawa and ends back where it started at the school track.

Registration forms are available at the district office, on the school website, at the two local medical clinics and at the high school office.

The requested donation is $30 for a family of five, $10 per person or $5 for students with ASB cards. (Preregistration is appreciated.)
