Boys golf league champion

MOSES LAKE - Kellan Roellich shot 78, and Brody Milbrandt carded an 80 to lead Moses Lake to a win in at home in POD 5 competition Monday at the Moses Lake Golf Course.

The victory nailed down the Big 9 League Championship for the first time in the last 20 years.

"I'm so proud of the way our whole team played this year," coach JR Cox said. "We had the top four individual finishers, and five of the top nine players in the league." 

Moses Lake finished the last regular season match with a team score of 324. Eastmont and Wenatchee tied at 355, Eisenhower had 375, Sunnyside, 390, and Davis finished with 422.

Rounding out the individual scores for the Chiefs were Brenden Cox and Tanner Montgomery who tied for fifth with 83's. Nick Sutherland finished eighth with an 87, and Dylan Greninger turned in a 94. Roellich was low round medalist for the match.

The league's MVP wasn't determined until the final few holes were played Monday.

"Sophomore Brody Milbrandt ended up shooting an 80 for the day to take the award," Cox said. "He and Brenden were within a half point at the start of the day, so it filled the round with pressure. They both gutted it out over the finishing holes. Brody was able to play his last few holes even par to pull away. I was proud of them both for supporting each other. What a great accomplishment for Brody."

The Chiefs were back on the links Monday to take part in the Inland Empire Invite, before heading to Yakima for the district tournament May 13.

"We take the top 24 in league points earned and those 24 play 36 holes in one day for our six available spots to state," Cox said. "For districts we play Apple Tree in the morning, and turn right around and play the Yakima Elks in the afternoon. Apple Tree is a long course to walk, so we need to pace ourselves in the morning. You don't win in the morning round, but you sure could lose it in the afternoon. So you have to play two good rounds."
