Cox finishes 28th at State

VANCOUVER - The weather conditions were less than ideal when 80 golfers hit the links at Camas Meadows for the 4A Boys State Championship Tournament May 21 and 22.

The Chiefs were represented by Brenden Cox, Brody Milbrandt and Nick Sutherland. After the first round of play on Tuesday, Cox, who shot 75, was the lone golfer to move on as Milbrandt (89) and Sutherland (101) missed the cut that was set at 80.

"The course we played was challenging and set up like a championship event should be set up ... long with every hole having elements that make golf tough," coach JR Cox said. "Brenden's 75 was pretty dang good in the rain. He was sitting tied for 12th after the first round, which was the highest placer we have had after the opening round in a very long time."

The second round didn't get any better weather-wise as the rain poured down for six straight hours.

"You really needed to be able to stay dry to shoot well," Cox said. "Brenden had a very rough front nine with a 48. Golf is funny like that as one day it goes were you want it to, and other days it goes where it wants to. But Brenden was able to straighten things out and shot a 37 on the back nine to end his high school career tied for 28th overall out of the 80 golfers who participated. I was so proud of his comeback as some would have packed it in after a front nine score like he shot. Brody and Nick will get another chance next year."

Cox finished with a two-day total of 160. State Champion Brian Humphrey's from Camas High School, who was playing on his home course, shot 144 for the tournament.
