MATTAWA - Three men, including one from Mattawa, were hospitalized in critical condition on May 20 after a head-on collision near Mattawa in the early morning.

First responders were called to the 24000 block of Road S SW at 5:30 a.m., Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones said.

Edilberto Raymundo–Manuel, age unknown, of Bremerton was driving a 1993 Honda Accord northbound on Road S SW when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 1997 Dodge Stratus driven by Jesus Chavez, 38 of Mattawa, who was on his way to work. ?

Raymundo-Manuel and Chavez suffered serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland. A male passenger in the Honda, whose identity was not determined as of press time, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Kadlec via Northwest MedStar.

Victims were treated initially at the scene by Grant County Fire District No. 8 EMTs and Hanford Fire Department paramedics. ??

All occupants were wearing seatbelts. Alcohol and excessive speed appear to have played a role in the collision, Jones said.

Grant County Sheriff’s Motor Traffic Unit is investigating.
