Heritage professor recognized with award

MOSES LAKE - Full-time high school science teacher and part-time college science instructor Andrew Boyd was one of six professors to receive the Heritage Adjunct Recognition and Appreciation Award for 2012-13.
Boyd, a science teacher at Almira/Coulee-Hartline High School in Coulee City, also teaches "methods of science" classes at the Heritage College branch campus in Moses Lake. Boyd is the undergraduate and post-graduate instructor.
Boyd has been employed as a part-time instructor, also called an adjunct professor, since summer quarter 2010, said Bonnie Hughes, the college's communication officer.
John Bartkowski, Heritage's regional director, said nominations come from each branch campus, and recipients are chosen by a screening panel. Teachers are recognized for outstanding teaching practices as well as longevity and commitment to the university, Bartkowski said.
Boyd's students say the professor passes on his love of science and excitement about the subject matter to his students, Bartkowski said. Boyd has clear expectations and the lesson activities are interesting and relevant to the subject matter, to teaching and to life outside the classroom, he said.
Boyd makes science fun, both learning it and teaching it, Bartkowski said. Students taking his class get both a sense of science and learn to enjoy the subject matter, he said.
