EAST WENATCHEE - The Moses Lake girls track team has accomplished something no other team has done in school history: capture its first Big Nine Girls District Championship.

The Chiefs did so by dominating the competition with a 53-point margin of victory at Zaephel Stadium in Yakima Saturday.

Wenatchee and Eastmont tied for second with 79 points, Eisenhower (62) placed fourth, and Davis finished fifth with 23.

"This was a great meet for Moses Lake. The coaches are proud of all the girls," coach Nicki Weiland said. "We took first in all the relay events, and Sadie (Nielsen) was voted Female Field Athlete for the Big Nine."

The Chiefs turned in several outstanding performances over the two-day meet, placing in the top four in all 18 events and breaking records in all the relay races including one in the 4x400 that has stood since 1987.

Unfortunately, only the top finisher in each event or a competitor who has set a state qualifying mark, will advance to the State Championships at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma May 23-25.

Moving on to the big stage are Sadie Nielsen who is the No. 1 ranked 4A thrower in the discus competition. She will also be competing in the shot put event.

Alysha Overland, who took first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.53, will also be making the trip. Selina Koon will be representing Moses Lake in the high jump, triple jump and long jump as she set a qualifying mark while placing second in the competition.

Caylah Lunning took first in the long jump and will be making the trek West as well. All members of the relay teams are headed to Mt. Tahoma too. Qualifying on the 4x100 team is Kayla Grigg, Alshya Overland, Caylah Lunning and Diamond Ransom.

Members of the 200 relay are Ransom, Lunning, London Cleverly and Alysha Overland. The 400 relay is made up of Alysha and Stephanie Overland, Cleverly and Casci Carpenter.

"The state meet should be fun" Weiland said. "We're ready to go."

Boys

The boys, finishing fourth overall, didn't fair as well as the girls at district, but still performed well against the competition. Wenatchee took first with 139 points, Eastmont was second with 113, Eisenhower came in third with 65, and Davis was fifth with 4 points.

Cameron Ballard is the only Chief moving on to the state tournament after placing first in the triple jump with a leap of 42-06.00.

"I'm pretty excited to see Cameron make it. He's a senior ... been with the program for four years so its a nice way for him to go out," coach Kevin Whittall said. "I thought Ben Crowell had a good meet taking third in the high jump and long jump events, and Dylan Darlington who placed third in the 1600. He's a 2-mile guys so that really wasn't his race, but I was proud of the way he finished. This wasn't the best season we've had, but I am proud of all the guys who stuck it out."
