Othello softball sweeps Wapato

OTHELLO - Madison Martinez tossed a perfect game from the circle in game one, and Kim Bullis and Kirsten Quigley combined for a no-hitter in game two of a doubleheader against Wapato at home Saturday.

The wins improve Othello to 12-2 in the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) and 14-2 overall, and lands the Huskies in a two-way tie for second with Selah in the league standings.

Othello scored 22 runs off 16 hits, and pitcher Madison Martinez mowed down 12-of-15 Wolves she faced in route to a perfect game from the circle.

But she needed a little help from her teammates to pull it off.

"Wapato did not go down easily," coach Rudy Ochoa said. "Our defense made two great plays in the fourth inning. The first was a hard line drive to backup Karrisa Valdez at second base. She timed it just right, having to jump up high in order to snag it. The second, was a hard shot to Kalinda Kosters at third."  

The Wolves didn't help their cause out much as Wapato committed three error in the ball game.

Kim Bullis had the hot bat for the Huskies, going three-for-three at the plate with two triples. Holly Fleshman had two hits in two at bats, and Daisy Salgado, Tori Zambrano and Diamond Franco had two hits each in the shutout win.

Bullis and Kristen Quigley combined for a 13 strikeout no-hitter in the second game of the twin bill. Othello jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the Huskies first at bat, added a run in the second, four in the third and three in the sixth to cruise to their second shutout of the afternoon.

Bullis' bat continued to heat up as she finished with three hits in four at bats with a home run. Martinez was three-for-four with two doubles, Fleshman went three-for-four with a double, and Sofie Rodriquez had two hits in three plate appearances with a double. Bullis recorded the win for Othello.

"Kim gave up a walk in the second inning otherwise it would have been a perfect game also," Ochoa said. "We are now 14-2 on the season and are in second place. We'll will face league leader Ellensburg (16-0) Saturday at home for the possibly the league championship." 

The first game of the doubleheader against the Bulldogs gets underway at 11 a.m.
