Resident thinks Warden needs a change

I would like to share an opinion in general of Warden. I strongly feel that it is much of a joke to have a sign that reads "This is a gang free community," as many can see as they enter, in all honestly it's really not. I also feel that this city could use a new mayor, as the current mayor has not been much of an improvement since he was elected a few years ago. Many resident's and I had brought up changes some based on complaints and concerns, Out of my own generosity and time I contributed my time to improve and better this community. I strongly hope in the future that the city of Warden can be improved by new changes.

Officials, department heads, appointed agency bureacrats who plead the fifth, "don't recall," or "didn't know" refuse to even respond to congressional summons. Or they are protected by presidential order. Or they are protected by an Attorney General who won't uphold the law.

Reader adds personal story to Sonico debate

I would like to address the people of the Port of Moses Lake on a personal level.

June 21, 2013 6 a.m.

Reader asks for consistent answer on Sonico

Currently Sonico has requested an extension of time to vacate Building 408 as the Port of Moses Lake views it to be unsafe. At this time there are two 747 aircraft that have been moved directly behind Building 408 for disassembly. This is the hangar that has had much press as of late due to the supposed lack of structural integrity. Prior dismantling has been performed further back on the tarmac. If the POML is concerned about Building 408 falling down, why would they choose to locate these teardowns in the shadow of a building that they consider structurally questionable? Wouldn't that be a safety issue for the crew performing the salvage work? I think we would all enjoy a bit of consistency from our elected officials. Either it is safe to be in and around Building 408 or it is not. It is my hope that the POML will provide Sonico with a reasonable time period to relocate.

Reader thinks pool price doesn't add up

Moses Lake School Board members are mulling over adding 650 square feet to the high school's new pool building at an additional $400,000. Is it just me, or did anyone else do the math? $615.38 per square foot for 650 square feet of empty space! And the board wonders why voting tax-payers won't agree to a tax increase so the members can decide how to spend the money.

Reader sees resurgence of life in Soap Lake

There is life in Soap Lake. This season is giving the city much needed life support. The Pow Wow last week was a great and enlightening event. The Hydroplane races this weekend was a rousing event. In a simpler term, "awesome", would work. The only downside of the races according to some of the drivers was "the course needed to be a bit longer so they could go faster." Hint, hint! I've talked with several business owners about these events and the smiles told the story. With the jet ski races next weekend and then Smokiam Days in July, I think it's about time to bring back the "Greek Festival." Again, hint, hint! Great jobs by the sponsors and organizers. I still think they need to rename the lake "Smokiam" but that's just my opinion.

Wildland fire service needed for Soap Lake

A Monday fire near Soap Lake showed how much wildland fire service is needed in the more rural areas of Grant County. True, Grant County Fire Districts 7, 13 and the Ephrata Fire Department responded to the 30-acre blaze and did an admirable job at putting it out, but an additional brush fire truck would have likely helped the situation. The City of Soap Lake is without a brush truck to fight wildland fires because a loaner truck from the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) needs a new water tank costing about $6,600. The existing tank doesn't meet the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, according to a Friday Columbia Basin Herald article. It isn't clear if the tank is truly unsafe, or just outdated. We're sure DNR officials have a good reason for the decision. At any rate, DNR officials aren't allowing the truck to be used until a new tank is installed.

Fresh News From MarDon

Perch fishing on the MarDon Dock continues to provide many families with limit lever perch catching. It continues to amaze our returning guests at MarDon Resort to see the increased populations of yellow perch, all over the Potholes Reservoir. Potholes Reservoir is just a couple feet below high pool as of Wednesday, June 12, 2013. The use of an underwater video camera off the Dock has been extremely entertaining to watch, visually it looks like an aquarium filled with fish. This evidence verifies the re-established perch populations on Potholes Reservoir, showing four different age classes of yellow perch. Recently we have witnessed the beginning of the crappie and blue-gill migration to the dock as well.

Warden resident addresses safety issue

Recently in a Warden City Council meeting June 11 I had spoken about a public safety concern towards an undisclosed business that has a large cracked window. I also have provided 24 hour notice to this issue before the meeting of the safety risk of the broken cracked window. It displays a public risk that it's likely to break and may cause serious injuries. After the meeting I also discussed it with Police Chief as to be aware that if no actions were to be taken, not only the business is liable to be sued, but the City of Warden as well after having knowledge of this safety concern. I just hope that Warden City Officials find it in their best interest to choose to take action to prevent a public risk and serious injuries.

Sonico employee comments on eviction

I have been at Sonico Inc. for a year in July as a Purchasing Assistant and from my understanding, Sonico Inc. was under the impression that the Port of Moses Lake, knew that Sonico Inc. wanted to stay in the area and rent out or buy a hanger. For the past 15 years the Port knew the hanger that we use has some risks to the building of 408, but no danger to safety of employees. Bill Perdue stated in a May 29 company meeting that he has documentation of many offers to the Port of Moses Lake to be able to rent or buy a building and he has felt in good faith that they would help us accomplish this goal.

Sonico employee suspects 'ulterior motive'

As a current Sonico employee, I am left wondering if there are ulterior motive behind the Port's decision to evict Sonico from Building 408. The structural integrity problems that led to the eviction notice have been known to the Port since the 1990s, but have only recently become a "public safety issue" although the integrity remains unchanged.

Samaritan leader recalls 1st impressions

GUEST EDITORIAL

MOSES LAKE - When I arrived in Moses Lake nine months ago to be the Interim CEO of Samaritan Healthcare, I was not sure what to expect other than a small rural district hospital in Eastern Washington. What I found was truly a gem of a hospital. I quickly realized that the people of the Moses Lake area were fortunate to have such an outstanding, high quality hospital.

Reader supports Sonico, small business

As a small downtown business owner, I rely on area companies like Sonico to provide family wage jobs, so families can shop, live and stay a part of our community. I need great businesses like Sonico that supports 40 local families and brings in business from around the world. A company that has invested 33 years in Moses Lake should be treated fairly by the Port of Moses Lake (POML), not called in one day in February and told you have to move... Sonico would need to find/build a building and move their entire company & inventory, they were given six months...period.

Reader responds to Quincy police

In response to the Quincy police chief and capatain being terminated: I was very disappointed and heartbroken to hear this news because it's not the chief or captain's fault that we have gang members and criminals who refuse to be law-abiding citizens. It's time for the prosecutor to get tough on these gang bangers and criminals. It's time for citizens to stop blaming law enforcement and blame the gangs and criminals instead.

Reader urges better understanding of Sonico

This is in response to the way I see Sonico being treated in the request to vacate hanger 408 by the POML. Time to relocate parts, supplies, overhaul and repair equipment, as well as offices can not be that diffcult to work out. I relocated here in Moses Lake 15 years ago and work for Sonico in building 408. I think people of Moses Lake, Grant County, and even at State level, need to know what we do at Sonico and get a better idea of our needs. I've noticed that a lot of people don't know what we do at Sonico. To keep this short, take a look at Sonicoinc.com.

Regarding the Sonico, Inc. eviction

Sonico has been asked to evacuate Building 408 that has been leased from the Port of Moses Lake for 33 years because of two structural evaluation reports, one in 1998 and one in 2012. It concerns me that the commissioners of the POML really do not have an understanding of the aerospace business. If they did, they would understand the FAA regulations that would have to be followed in a move like this.

June 7, 2013 6 a.m.

Thoughts on Building 408

The Port of Moses Lake has issued an eviction to Sonico, Inc., which has been a long time tenant of the Port of Moses Lake for 33 years. I am employed by Sonico and work in Building 408 for the last 27 years. The Port of ML states that the eviction is based upon a report, which found Building 408 unsafe for occupancy. However, what people should understand, is that Sonico has occupied Building 408 on a daily basis for over fifteen years following the first report that found Building 408 "with some defects". Fifteen years (May 13, 1998) ago the Port made the conscious discussion to not take any action at that time and the building was suitable for lease. A more recent report (June 15, 2012) actually found fewer issues with Building 408, than the report from 15 years ago. Two of the Port commissioners have known about the first report for many, many years, and some are on their second term as Commissioners. Now the Port Commissioners take the stance that the building is unsafe and thus must be evacuated as soon as possible.

Sonico employee calls eviction unfair

I have been at Sonico Inc. for a year in July as a Purchasing Assistant and from my understanding, Sonico Inc. was under the impression that the Port of Moses Lake, knew that Sonico Inc. wanted to stay in the area and rent out or buy a hanger. For the past 15 years the Port knew the hanger that we use has some risks to the building of 408, but no danger to safety of employees.

While the Columbia Basin Herald did an excellent job in their recent Progress 2013 magazine to tout the expanding Aerospace Industry in Moses Lake, they neglected to note a 33-year-old aerospace company in Moses Lake named Sonico, Inc. Both Rep. Warnick and Gov. Inslee were present at the ribbon cutting for ATS's move here but where were they or the Herald when the Port of Moses Lake and the Commissioners rented the 'old JAL' building to ATS over Sonico?

Glenna May Price

Glenna May Price, 82, of Richland, passed away May 28, 2013 after a vibrant life full of family and friends. She was born in Lake Chelan, Washington to Glen and Theodosia Leyda. She married Mervin (Mel) Price in 1962 and moved to Moses Lake where they raised two daughters, Diane and Darlene. Glenna was known for her creative landscaping in the desert climate, generously displaying multi-colored plastic flowers and yard ornaments. Although the work was hard, Glenna enjoyed working with her friends from Sunspiced, where she retired in 1993. Eight years ago, she moved to the Three Rivers Retirement Apartments in Richland to be closer to family. Her biggest challenge in moving to the Tri-Cities was downsizing her knickknack collection to a couple hundred of her most favorite items. She enjoyed helping others, playing rummy, watching Walker Texas Ranger, and sharing her favorite snacks-Ritz crackers, Hershey's kisses, and the occasional Nutter Butter cookie.
