Beverly man charged with assault

BEVERLY - An arrest warrant has been issued for a 19-year-old alleged gang member in connection with a Shell station attack in Mattawa in October.

Carlos E. Mendoza, of Beverly, was recently charged with second-degree assault.

When police responded to the call to the station, the victim was reportedly found inside the eating area slipping in and out of consciousness.

According to the police report, two witnesses stated that Mendoza and two others allegedly entered the eating area and began taunting the victim.

Mendoza was allegedly standing behind the victim and hit him on top of the head with the handle of a knife, knocking him out. Witnesses stated that one person allegedly held the door of the eating area closed so no one could come in.

Law enforcement was also able to obtain video evidence of the alleged attack.

The victim stated that after he was struck he was unable to open his eyes and he felt like he was "lost inside." He was examined at Wahluke Family Clinic, and a doctor explained that the area hit was near major nerves.

According to court documents, the responding officer drove to an alleged gang hangout and identified Mendoza and the two accomplices. Mendoza was able to flee, but the two accomplices were caught and placed into custody for second-degree assault.

Mendoza is a Hispanic male who stands 5-feet-11-inches, weighs 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
