Chiefs basketball back from the Gonzaga Shootout
SPOKANE - The Moses Lake High School girls basketball team continues to perform well on the hardwood as they took five-of-six games at the Gonzaga Shootout in Spokane June 6-9.
The Chiefs won their first game, dropped the second, then put together a four-game win streak to finish out their second tournament of the summer. Moses Lake was one of 50 teams invited to the shootout.
"Each varsity team was scheduled to play six games against teams of a similar ability level," coach Matt Strophy said. "We were missing players due to the Summer Jam concert at The Gorge on Saturday, but once again, some of the younger girls stepped up and helped us. After our second week of practices, we showed improvement in taking care of the ball. We limited our turnovers compared to our performance at the Snohomish tournament last weekend, but we still can improve in that area. We also wanted to do a better job controlling the tempo, and we did that for the most part too. We have the ability to jump out and get a lead, but then we must sustain it. Depth and conditioning are always issues during summer basketball, but we're hoping that will improve as we continue through our summer basketball schedule."
Game 1
The Chiefs faced East Valley of Spokane in Game 1 and came away with a 42-34 win over the Knights. McKenna Walker led the way for Moses Lake with 16 points. Avery Clark added six points, and Jessie Lorea finished with five points, seven boards, three assists and two steals.
Game 2
Moses Lake got 11 points each from Emily Olson and Walker in the second game of the tournament, but their efforts weren't enough to propel the Chiefs to a win over five-time defending 1B State Champion Colton High School as they dropped the contest to the Wildcats 47-37.
Game 3
The Chiefs improved to 2-1 with a 42-32 win over Lewiston. Olson led the way again for Moses Lake with 11 points. Walker added eight points and four boards, Kaitlyn Stevens pumped in seven points, Lorea had six points, four steals, four assists, and pulled down three rebounds, Madison Tudor scored four points, had two steals and two assists, and Carina LeFave finished with four points and three rebounds.
Game 4
Eighteen points and nine rebounds from McKenna Walker, and 12 points and eight boards from Jessie Loera paved the way to a lopsided 51-29 win over the North Central Indians of Spokane in the Chiefs fourth game of the tournament. Emily Olson chipped in nine points, Kaitlyn Stevens finished with eight.
Game 5
The fifth game of the tournament was about as close as they come as the Chiefs pulled out a 46-42 victory over the Mt. Spokane Wildcats. Walker knocked down 16 points, Olson added nine, and Lorea finished with seven points and seven assist in the four-point win.
Game 6
Three Chiefs scored in double figures to lead Moses Lake to a 62-52 win over the Ferris Saxons in the final game of the Shootout. Walker set the pace once again with 21 points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds. Emily Olson added 17 points and five boards, and Kaitlyn Stevens had 10 points and five rebounds.
The Chiefs hit the road to Kamiakin today for their second set of summer games. They will be in Wenatchee for their third summer tournament June 14-16.
