Reader wants justice
I've written letters to Grant County committee concerning my injuries I received by a police officer. I was charged like a criminal an given two strikes. This was all a cover up to charge me to cover up beating I recieved from officer. I've been given a death sentence. There you have in our courts similar cases of drive bys, rape, murder in the past two years others get a slap on the hand if you're the right race. So many young hispanic boys serving 25 to 40 years. I speak the truth say what you want see how many hispanics go to prison waiting an appeal. There so much police brutality going on, our counties wish to ignore. Our courts are over crowded people's trials take almost about a year what about the right to a speedy trial. We're judged by race, many label as gang bangers others are freed for drive bys, rape an murder if your the right race you'll get off by our courts it's like winning the lottery. It's been two years I haven't seen my son that was convicted for guns that weren't his a jury wasn't allowed to see statements made that guns weren't my son. Because I know I have a criminal record waiting an appeal. I never had a record just tickets. Who pays for my injuries and doctor bills. Where's the justice juries are used to do the court's dirty work.

The Okanogan River is usually the first to freeze and now the Methow, Entiat and Wenatchee are both showing signs of shelf ice along the shore and even anchor ice in the slower sections. Neither anglers nor steelhead like these conditions.

Reader voting for Bill Bailey
We are faced with an important decision. The election for director of the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District will help determine the future of our lake.
Reader endorses Bill Bailey, sites partnership
I have known Bill Bailey for many years and was a business partner with him for several years. He is an intelligent man and running for a position on the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) vacant board position. Since I did have the business experience with him, I decided to work on his campaign, as I am very confident he will properly analyze the true condition of the operation and financial condition of the MLIRD and bring that information to the tax payers. This needs to be done as there are many serious questions concerning the success of the dredging project, its cost, and confusion about other expenses. At the last board meeting, a question was asked about a $300,000 increase from $500,000 to $800,000 in only one expense category which was not answered as the information did not seem to be available. This is a major and unexplained increase. Please cast your vote in this important election for Bill Bailey and remember that you have your tax dollars riding on the outcome and your vote will really count.

Is anyone paying attention? The $300,000 dredge the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District is so proud of was drug through rocks and mud so it could be removed from the lake last week. Why wasn't it removed before the lake went down? Who is in charge over there? Is anyone being held accountable for the disgraceful way our tax dollars are being spent?
Reader thinks Bailey is best for director
As a local business owner, member of the Moses Lake Planning Commission and a property owner within the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) boundaries, I encourage voters to elect Bill Bailey as Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District director. Bill's unwavering commitment and dedication to our community is evident in his service on the Moses Lake and Grant County planning commissions as well as his involvement in other community organizations. This experience would make Bill an irreplaceable asset in working with the various government agencies involved in the permitting process required to continue the restoration of our lake. Along with his civic service, Bill has successfully owned and operated two local businesses, one of which is an excavation company. This gives Bill the working knowledge needed to oversee the efficient operations of MLIRD.
Reader supports Mick Hansen for commission
I read in the newspaper where Curt Carpenter of the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District is going to get a pay raise of $100,000 a year. With a downturned economy, what would make the board decide on such a huge pay raise? Boeing engineers in Seattle make between $81,000 and $91,000 a year. I live on the lake, so I pay for your salary and no one is worth $100,000! We need to elect Mick Hansen to the board so we have some accountability and no more rubber stamp, good old boy politics!

Moses Lake is the fifth largest lake in Washington State with up to 18 miles in length and over 120 miles of shore line covering 6500 acres. The current Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) budget is over $1.2 million with the support coming from the taxpayer. The current dredging project was to be complete in 2-3 years and now changed to 5 years and the sand bar may never be gone. Less than 4,000 cubic yards of sediment was removed in 2011 with the reported removal by the MLIRD at over 20,000 cubic yards. Please drive by Parker Horn on highway 17 and see what your tax dollars have purchased with very little change in the sand bar and a small pile of sediment.

After attending more than a few Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) meetings, over the past two years, we have come to several conclusions. First, the MLIRD board and staff are doing a truly amazing job of providing the users of Moses Lake with irrigation, rehabilitation and recreation. Thanks to the MLIRD our lake is the source of a secure irrigation water supply, stable rates, open and much cleaner water access, economic development, tourism income, and family and sporting recreation.
Reader concerned about wandering pitbull
I am really upset with our dog catcher. I have been having problems with a stray pitbull for three weeks already, and having my neighbor dogs invaded my fenced yard. I have a chihuahua, a 7-year-old child, and I am six months pregnant. The neighbor dogs are aggressive, and the stray dog is trying to come into my house and growls and barks at kids walking home from school. I called the sheriff about the stray dog, and was told he could do nothing about this dog because it hasn't bit anyone. He asked me to see if the dog is aggressive, I am not going to walk up to a dog, and see if it will bite. I have not let my dog go outside to use the restroom because the dogs are jumping the fence, and getting into my back yard. I thought a dog catcher's job was to pick up wandering animals. The only way they will do anything is if the dog attacks. Wouldn't you want to prevent that? I have been keeping my dog contained. I have a fenced yard for my dog, and I can't even use it. What am I suppose to do about this problem if the sheriff won't help me?

In last week's paper I read that the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District directors extended Mr. Carpenter's contract for another five years. The first strange thing in this that his current contract does not expire for another three years! They not only extended it, but gave him quite a substantial raise to manage six or seven seasonal employees. The comment was that he hasn't received a raise in two or three years. Who has? With the economy the way it is, most people are thankful to just have a job. This pay range - $100,000 plus benefits now puts him in the same range as somebody running an entire government sector, managing hundreds of employees and responsible for millions of dollars in budget.

People owning a parcel of land in the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District have a unique opportunity. This opportunity is not just to cast a vote, but to have our votes guarded and protected in a way that in the United States we have come to expect and demand. Unfortunately, this has not been the case for the MLIRD. We now have a new system designed to have an election that will be assured that the voters will decide the election!
Reader likes Bailey for commission
Our lake is vital, not only to the citizens of our community, but also to the families that come from out of the area to enjoy the great things that it has to offer. This is why we need to lean forward and continue with the dredging and revitalization project that is already in place. We have too much invested to quit now.

Will Rogers said, "It is not that I don't choose to run, I won't run no matter how badly the country needs a comedian at the time." If the colossal screw-ups at the irrigation district are ceasing to be funny, you can't fault their timing. Consider the beached whale caper with the dredge. They did it to themselves! Remember, the district controls the lake level. So, after dredging a hole just big enough to sink the dredge, they let the water out, leaving the dredge mired in its own muck. The dredge doesn't drive, it doesn't walk, it floats, or did; then presto, no lake.

This is what I don't like. Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) has a permit for 5 years in order to remove the silt east of the Alder Street fill using a dredge. For the last year management claims the project is on schedule and working as planned. That would make you believe 1/5th of the silt has been removed. I challenge you to stand on Alder Street fill and look east, what do you see? A larger lake and island 1/5 the size it was last year? Doesn't look like it to me. The dredge is not working as planned and something needs to be done to either get it working properly or other options need to be looked at.

Nice editorial about budgets. It's the best idea yet. Too bad the people depending on government paychecks won't let it happen. They will start arguing about how their agency or organization that relies on state money is so important that they need all of the their budget. If they don't have a target for a larger cut to leave them alone, they will attack your idea or the Columbia Basin Herald.

GUEST EDITORIAL: SMALL BUSINESSES: 'Count us out governor'
SEATTLE - A special session of the Washington Legislature opened Nov.r 28 for the purpose of finding some big-dollar, Christmas gift cards to plug the expected deficit in the state budget. Shortly before, the big boys, Boeing, Microsoft, and the association that represents them all, gathered under Gov. Chris Gregoire's window to sing her lovely carols of understanding and cooperation.
No taxation without representation
MOSES LAKE - As a resident business owner, tax payer, employer and longtime volunteer on many local boards, I see obvious reasons and many subtle cost-benefits of having a clean and healthy lake at the center of our community. Our homes, businesses and property values are obviously at stake. Without Moses Lake, I doubt many of us would choose to live here. I once took the lake for granted, assuming it was "natural" rather than a lake "managed" mainly for irrigation. Shortly after landing a job here in 1975, I realized Moses Lake was slowly dying from a complex set of natural and human conditions. Today our lake is recovering due to a wise board decision over 40 years go to add "rehabilition" to the irrigation district mission. We simply cannot afford to short-change the lake now. Thank you Clint Connelly, Huck Fuller and Edward Hull.

Reader endorses Bill Bailey
Bill Bailey is the right man for the job! Please, join me and cast your vote for a true leader on Dec. 13. Having attended several board meetings of the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District I feel that I have a good sense of the direction and purpose of that body. The work they've accomplished, over the last three years, has been extraordinary, for which the community should feel very fortunate. This group of people has a true sense of commitment to the community by improving the water quality of our largest, single asset, "the lake". This asset brings more tourism dollars and helps to bolster the property values of surrounding residents than any other entity within our county. Moses Lake is a destination resort for thousands of people in our region. Let's keep this momentum going by electing another forward thinker, a man with vision, Bill Bailey.
BOYS PREP BASKETBALL: 12/02 Moses Lake 43 @ Hanford 57
Bill Bailey is the choice of this reader
I am writing this letter in support of Bill Bailey for the director of the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District. Bill has been involved with the district for years and knows its mission. He has confidence with the current staff and appreciates the hard work that they do. Bill knows the construction business and was contracted to do work for the district years ago. That work required the removal of silt from sections of the lake. Using machinery silt was removed from Marina, Montlake, Laguna and Goose Ridge. This activity was brought to a halt by several governmental agencies including DOE. Since then the MLIRD has worked closely with these agencies, received permits and started again the removal of lake sediments using a dredge. This is working and will work even better next year. Bill supports this dredging and has ideas how to make it even more productive. His highest goal is the improvement of our lake, and he does not have any axes to grind or a personal agenda. When he tells you he will do something, he will. He is a person you can count on. Please vote for Bill Bailey on Dec. 13 and elect him director of the MLIRD.

GUEST EDITORIAL: Concerns about Grant PUD rates, budget
MOSES LAKE - With the up coming 2012 Grant County PUD budget some observations of the PUD should be made. Grant County is very fortunate for the foresight that a handful of people had back in the 1950's that formed and created the PUD we have today. To keep the PUD as it was originally intended, to serve the people with low cost power and be responsive to the needs of the citizens requires much effort and perseverance on the part of the commission.
The Fishin' Magician: Steelhead on The Rocks
I jumped on board Shane Magnuson's boat to do some video on steelhead fishing for the new television show the other day, and had a blast. His two clients I had fished with before, down at Drano Lake. Bob Hall and Pete Flones sure picked a good time to come over from the west side to some steelheading. The first day they hooked 20 fish, got 12 to the boat and had five hatchery fish in the mix. On the second day, when I was on board they hooked 16, got 13 to the boat and there were six keepers. You see I got to get my limit when they were done.

Reader appreciates apology
I was asked by city council member Karen Liebrecht if I could come to the Nov. 8 city council meeting. It was a very friendly and gracious phone call and she explained why she hoped I would come. She is a small business owner and because I admire her for many reasons, I agreed to attend. At the council meeting, when it came her turn to comment on non-agenda items, she spoke as to why she had asked me to be there. She said that she owed me an apology for failing to speak in my defense at a prior council meeting. There had been an uncharacteristic outburt of temper by a council member who threatened to have me removed from the building. When she finished, I asked if I could speak. A one word answer came from our mayor, Jon Lane. He just said, "Briefly." I thanked her and told her I surely didn't think she had failed me. With barely two years of council experience, it was not her place to apologize for another councilmember's tantrum. Especially since several week had passed with no apology from him.

GUEST EDITORIAL: Farm Bills benefit more people than farmers
SPOKANE - Among many other pieces of legislation, Congress is debating the Farm Bill. Most of us don't farm but most of us should care about this legislation that comes before Congress every five years or so. Why should we care? Because we all eat. Because agriculture is responsible for one out of every 12 jobs in America. Because agriculture contributes positively to America's trade balance and is a major part of Washington's exports. Because about 35 percent of Washington state is agricultural land and its management affects water and air quality for everyone. Because a large part of America and Washington is rural.
Reader disagrees with editorial
The Columbia Basin Herald fell into a common and comfortable trap trying to convince us that the Super Committee or our state government has a "simple and fair" solution to its current budget crisis (CBH Editorial, November 25). Besides its proposal that a single, across the board cut will eliminate the deficit, the opinion digs itself in further by stating that "This approach is easier for an agency to make and prevents the total loss of any service." Yikes.
