CBSS girls lose to Liberty Bell

WINTHROP - Consistency is the name of the game in basketball. Put together a solid first and second half and the outcome typically favors the effort.

Unfortunately, the Lady Phoenix managed the former and not the latter as the Columbia Basin Secondary School (CBSS) dropped a road game to the Lady Mountain Lions last night, 38-18.

"We came out very strong in the first half and I was excited to see what the rest of the game would shape up to be," coach Clint Scriven said. "But after halftime we came out extremely flat not scoring in the third quarter and that was a big turn around and a game changer for us."

The Phoenix jumped out to an 11-8 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of action. But Liberty Bell caught fire in the second quarter to go up 20-16 at the break.

CBBS was in the thick of things down by only four points to start the third quarter of play. However, the Phoenix shooters went ice cold over the next eight minutes and put a goose egg on the scoreboard. Liberty Bell knocked down 11 points in the quarter to take a 31-16 lead.

Things didn't get any better for CBSS in the final eight minutes as the team was out scored 7-2 and lost by 20 points.

The loss dropped the Phoenix to 0-1 in league play and 2-6 overall.

Crystal Lloyd led the way for CBSS with nine points and nine rebounds. Amber Lloyd added five points and 10 boards, and Madison Hansen and Amree Kimball rounded out the scoring with two points each.

"We never got back into the swing of things scoring only two points in the fourth quarter coming from two different players on free throws," Scriven said. "We are usually a second half team digging our hole in the first half. Now, if we can put together a good consistent first half and a good second half, we will be able to come away with another win."

The Lady Phoenix get another chance to do just that when they host Warden Thursday at 6 p.m.
