Martha McGough

Martha J. McGough, 79, longtime Moses Lake resident passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at LakeRidge Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Moses Lake. Martha was born on Dec. 24, 1931 in Pomeroy, Washington to Oscar and Ida Mae Burns. She was the sixth of nine children raised on the farm. She attended school in both Pomeroy and Pullman, graduating from Pomeroy High School in 1950. Martha then went to Washington State University and received her bachelor's degree in home economics in 1954. She was a lifelong member of the Chi Omega Sorority and held many college friendships dear.

After graduation she taught school in Ritzville and Odessa, WA. She met her husband, Francis P. (Frank) McGough in Ritzville. They had six children. In 1966 they moved to Moses Lake where they continued to reside. Martha moved to LakeRidge Care Center in 2007.

Martha was best known as a longtime substitute teacher in the Moses Lake School District for 30 years. She also taught English for several years for the Japanese Agricultural Trainees Program.

She was a member of the Friends of the Library, Women's Club, Columbia Basin Allied Arts and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. She volunteered multiple years as a Food and 4-H judge at the Grant County Fair.

Martha is survived by six children, Shannon Hawthorne, Dorothy (Dennis) Tiede, Mike (Lynn) McGough, Mary McGough, George McGough and Megan (Mark) Cormier; 10 grandchildren, Lloyd and Patrick Johnson, Nathan and Evan Hawthorne, John and Molly McGough, Katlin and Adam Cormier, Todd and Jillian McGough; one sister, Florence (Paul) Fitzsimmons; and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and siblings, Lucian, Duane, Barbara, David, Ruth and Rosemary.
