SOAP LAKE - Masquers Theater is getting in the holiday spirit with two upcoming productions.

"The Velveteen Rabbit" opens Friday and Masquers' annual Reader's Theatre opens Dec. 10.

"The Velveteen Rabbit," with book and lyrics by George Gray and music by Chris Talbert, is based on the book by Margery Williams.

The musical tells the story of a boy and his velveteen rabbit. When the other toys cause the rabbit, played by Rachel Bresee, to feel lonely and inadequate, it finds comfort from the Skin Horse, played by Clifford Bresee. The Skin Horse espouses the magic of "becoming real" to the rabbit, who embarks on a quest to earn the boy's love and become "real."

Patty Jardine directs the production assisted by Peggy Dubey, who also plays the role of Nana.

Tickets for "The Velveteen Rabbit" are $8 for adults and $5 for children under 14.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17. Sunday matinees are 2 p.m. Dec. 4 and 18.

For reservations, call the Masquers box office at 509-246-2611.

Bobbi Christie directs Masquers' Reader's Theatre at 2 p.m. Dec. 10-11. The Reader's Theatre features stories and songs inspired by different holiday traditions.

Masquers considers Reader's Theatre a "gift to the community," and admission is free. Donations to the food bank are welcome.

Masquers is located at 322 E Main Ave. in Soap Lake.
