Soap Lake girls lose to Bridgeport

SOAP LAKE - The Soap Lake High School Lady Eagles found the going rough against Bridgeport last night, losing a lopsided game to the Fillies, 49-27.

Bridgeport got out front early to take a 15-10 lead after the first quarter, and out scored Soap Lake 12-3 in the second eight minutes of the contest to double the home team score, 23-13 at the break.

"I thought the girls played hard tonight," coach Nathan Covey said. "We fell behind by a big margin in the first half, but they never gave up and that's all I can ask for."

The Eagles scored the first two buckets of the second half to close within 10 points, 27-17, and held the Fillies in check for the first three minutes of play until Bridgeport's Liduvina Bucio hit a bucket to start an 8-0 run to put the visiting team up 35-17.

Soap Lakes' Victoria Aguilar had a chance to cut into the lead, but missed two free throws. The Fillies got the rebound on the second miss and pushed the ball down court and Bucio found nothing but net on 3-point shot to start another run by  Bridgeport lead to increase its lead to 42-17.

Cinthia Piedra hit a trey for the Eagles on their next trip down the hardwood as time ran out in the third quarter and Soap Lake trailed 42-20.

The Lady Eagles made three of four shots from the charity stripe to start the fourth quarter action, but a 7-0 run by the Fillies pushed Bridgeport's lead to 49-23. Soap Lake got another four points from Piedra to make the game interesting, but it was too little too late for the Eagles as they dropped the game 49-27.

"I thought the he biggest difference in the game tonight was our poor free throw shooting,"  Covey said. "We were 3-for-22 from the line and if we make those shots, we're in the ball game."

Soap Lake gets back into action with two games over the weekend, when the team hosts Waterville at 6 p.m. Friday, and again Saturday when the Lady Eagles entertain Wilson Creek in Soap Lake.
