CBSS boys basketball lose to Oroville, girls win

MOSES LAKE - Michael Northrup had 23 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and four blocks, but it was enough to help the Phoenix  get a win over Oroville Friday.

Eric Curtiss added 17 points, eight boards and four steals in the losing effort as Columbia Basin Secondary School (CBSS) dropped the game to the Hornets 61-45.

Oroville jumped out to a 22-10 lead after the first eight minutes of action, was up 31-22 at intermission, and out scored the Phoenix 30-23 in the second half to pull out the victory.

"My kids made a great effort to catch up as we got within six points each quarter," coach Rolland Hansen said. "But an evening plagued by turnovers and rushed offense led to the loss."

The Phoenix committed 26  miscues in the contest.

"Defensively we played hard ,but unforced turnovers led to easy baskets for the visiting Hornets," Hansen said. " We didn't play as well when we were behind and it's something were working on. The team showed a lot of promise tonight against a solid Oroville squad."

CBSS get a chance to ring up a win in the league standings when the team hosts Wilson Creek tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Crystal Lloyd turned in a stellar effort with 22 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Lady Phoenix to a 32-20 win over visiting 2B Oroville  Saturday.

CBSS fell behind 8-5 at the end of the first quarter of play, but came back to tie the game 22-22 at the half. The Phoenix defense came up big in the third quarter, holding the Hornets to just two points, while taking a 10 point lead, 26-16.

"Crystal exploded near the end of the half and picked up where she left off in the third quarter to spark a 9-2 and expand our lead to 10," coach Clint Scriven said. "Amber Lloyd, who finished with four points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals, was a little quiet tonight struggling from the floor, but kept things going for us with her defense."

Destiny Quarles (two) and Madison Hansen (four) also contributed points in the win  while pulling down six boards each.

"The Ladies came out strong in the second half to put the Hornets away," Scriven said. "Oroville is a good team and we were able to stand up and play hard against them."

The win improved the Phoenix non-league record to 2-2. CBSS starts league action tonight as they host the Devils of Wilson Creek. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
