The Fishin' Magician: Opportunities at Roses Lake

| December 5, 2011 5:00 AM

I was invited to go along on a trip to Rufus Woods with Anton Jones of Darrell and Dads Family Guide Service, but I have so much on my plate this week I had to decline. Too bad, too, Jones is catching good numbers of triploids at Rufus. He suggests that boating anglers first try their luck at Pump 1, which is on the west shore of the reservoir a couple of miles above the dam.

If the fish aren't there then make the trip to the first set of net pens. He also mentioned that the usual plant of rainbow in Roses Lake has been delayed. It will still happen and they should even be in Roses by now. Fishing at Roses can be very good, not just for planters but bigger fish until the ice forms.

I also ran into Ron Oules on the water the other day. He said he has had pretty good fishing for steelhead in the Bridgeport area of the Columbia, but is being bothered by the triploids. There are a lot of them in there and they are beating the steelhead to the bait. I have had the same experience here, and although I haven't caught as many steelhead as usual it makes for an action-packed day.
