White Christmas? Pack patience, chains

MOSES LAKE - Washington weather forecasters are predicting a white Christmas, at least in the mountains.

A storm system could move over the mountain passes late Saturday into Sunday, with heavy snow possible above 2,500 feet.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is advising travelers to expect delays and pack tire chains alongside presents before hitting the road.

Based on historical data, WSDOT officials expects traffic to be heavy at various times Friday through Monday.

When Christmas and New Year's holidays fall on a weekend, traffic on Snoqualmie Pass historically increases nearly 40 percent compared to a typical December weekend, according to information provided by WSDOT.

The agency does not expect much congestion on Stevens Pass, although winter conditions could impact traffic or bring more winter sports enthusiasts to the mountains.
