The Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) meeting on Nov. 14 was a dog and pony show. The panel spoke about how great dredging projects can be. They pointed out what everyone already knows - if and when the lake is clean, the future of Moses Lake will benefit through tourism, property values, economic growth, and quality of life. None of the district members were on the panel. No one who could answer direct questions about our dredge project.

"Why are so few people carrying the burden of tax by the MLIRD when everyone has an opportunity to use the lake?"

Ron Covey gave the vague answer that "people have to ask to be included into the district." A voice from the crowd responded, "I didn't ask to be taxed!"

Do people realize the MLIRD raised taxes without a vote? They collect an enormous amount of revenue for their budget.

The MLIRD now knows its geographical boundary lines. However, home owners outside the district boundaries were taxed, then hastily asked into joining. Some are now being given refunds going back three years. How long have you been taxed for not being in the MLIRD?

I think the tax liability should be equally distributed among Moses Lake residents without increasing the revenue collected by the MLIRD. It would be fair to all who enjoy the lake and its recreational opportunities.

If you don't want to be taxed, ask Ron Covey to be excluded from the MLIRD. Ask where the district boundaries are. Ask if you are included and why some of your neighbors are not. I for one didn't asked to be taxed.

I hope all of you feel better knowing the MLIRD will raise your taxes again, and that not every resident in Moses Lake is not paying equally.
