Bomb hurts teen in Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE - A 16-year-old male was critically injured when a pipe bomb reportedly exploded in his hands.
At about 3 p.m. on Wednesday Moses Lake Police, Grant County deputies and Moses Lake fire units responded to a report of an explosion at a residence on Fairway Drive.
Emergency dispatchers had received a call from a girl saying her boyfriend made a pipe bomb and it exploded. A few moments later, a woman told dispatchers her son had created the device as part of a "science experiment," and that "pieces of both his hands were on the floor."
Police reportedly cleared several people from inside the residence upon arrival and a Medstar helicopter was called in to evacuate the boy from a landing zone set up in an undeveloped field across the street, according to dispatch records.
After being transported to Samaritan Hospital, the injured boy was scheduled to be flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment, according to Grant County sheriff's officials.
At least one other person was inside the home and injured, although they were treated by paramedics on the scene, sheriff's officials said.
Moses Lake Police Chief Dean Mitchell said Wednesday night while there was no reason to believe there were further explosives inside the home, police requested the Richland Bomb Squad assist in securing the scene.
Mitchell said more details would be released at a later date.
