Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill

I have been trying to get up to Rufus Woods for weeks, and I finally got there on Wednesday. Last week by the time I was done fishing for steelhead at Bridgeport, which resulted in two wild fish caught and released, the wind was blowing too hard to get out on the water on Rufus. This week, I got my buddy Rollie Schmitten to make another attempt. Of course we had to try for steelhead at a couple of holes before we hopped over the dam to Rufus. Rollie did hook on fish and I got a triploid for our efforts, and then we launched on Rufus and away we went. Rollie had his sights set on getting some walleye so we ran up the reservoir quite a ways and then started trolling along a steep bank. Sure enough, he knew where to find them, and he landed a nice 23-inch walleye. One the next pass he hooked another one and this one broke his line! I had a meeting to get to Leavenworth, so we just made a few casts for triploids and then headed back to the ramp. I still haven't got a full day on Rufus yet, but at least it has produced a pretty good walleye dinner so far.

Sue fulfilled her passion of becoming a cosmetologist. Fierce and independent, she managed her own barbershop where she established loyal customers who grew to be lifelong friends. Always the mother, the next phase was even more fulfilling becoming a grandmother. Known as Nana, she never missed the chance to spoil her grandchildren. It was very typical for Nana to introduce all "the firsts": first cereal, first sippy cup, first underwear, and of course the first cowboy boots.

Wild prepare for Michigan

This will be the first meeting of the season between the Michigan Warriors and the Wenatchee Wild, with the Wild leading the all time series 1-0 since Michigan joined the NAHL in 2012-2013, with the only meeting between the two teams coming in the league showcase when Wenatchee won 3-0. The Wild will have their work cut out for them this weekend, as the Warriors are 5-1-4 through their last 10 games and are led in scoring by Jake Hopfner with 15 points, coming in the form of eight goals and seven assists. Other weapons for the Warriors include Jon Farkas with 10 points from four goals and six assists and Alec Pellegrino with nine points on four goals and five assists. Wenatchee will have to find a way to stop the formidable scorers of Michigan and they will need stellar play from Gustaf Johansson in goal, as he is coming off a strong outing against Fairbanks last weekend, in which he made 36 stops in the win on Friday and added 28 saves in Saturdays tilt.

Ephrata falls to Prosser, drops out of playoff race

The CWAC conference showdown on Friday night at Fiker stadium had everything at stake for both teams, as the Tigers and Mustangs were both 5-2 in league heading into the game in a four-way tie for second place, behind conference leading Ellensburg, along with Othello and West Valley. The winning team would remain in position to claim one of the three playoff berths out of the CWAC, while the losing team will fall out of contention all together. Both Ephrata and Prosser showed why the league is so competitive this year with so many closely matched teams. Friday night was no exception as the game came down to the final minutes with a 23-23 tie at the 8:40 mark in the final quarter, before Prosser broke the deadlock when Cardell Jones caught his third touchdown pass and put the Mustangs up 30-23.

Soap Lake drops to Entiat, eliminated from playoff contention

SOAP LAKE - Even with all the ups and downs and injuries throughout the season for the Eagles, they found themselves controlling their own destiny on Friday night with a win and your in game against Entiat. In a Northeast 1B South showdown with the entire season at stake the Eagles of Soap Lake just couldn't soar as they did earlier in the season, as they fell to the relentless attack of the Entiat Tigers. A win for Soap Lake would have secured the number three seed in the conference, but a slow start and crucial mistakes but the Tigers in the driver seat early, and ultimately squashed their playoff aspirations ; dead in their tracks. Entiat scored on two pick-sixs' in the first half to set the tone for the game and stifled the Eagles emotional charge that they started the game with.

Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill

I had a great trip to the Grande Ronde River this week. Eric Granstrom came along to capture the action with the video camera, and we were guided by Brian Nielson, of BJ Guide Service, from Moses Lake. Nielson has been floating the Grande Ronde for over 30 years and knows every rock in the stream, and which ones steelhead will be hiding behind. We were hosted by Boggan's Oasis, and they provide sumptuous meals, lodging and a shore lunch that included fresh baked pie. It was clear and cold when we launched below the bridge at the base of Rattlesnake Grade, and the rod went down before we were too far down stream. A small king had hit the Hot Shot and woke us all up. The next was a wild steelhead that also took a plug. We floated into the sunshine in the steep canyon and Nielson pointed out old homesteads and wagon trails as we went along. His story was interrupted once when a hatchery fish grabbed the jig I was fishing below a bobber. We hopped around other anglers on our way down the river and at the "last chance hole" another hatchery steelhead hit a hot shot and was netted. It was a terrific day, on a spectacular river.
