| November 17, 2013 5:00 AM

EPHRATA – Publilc Health Officer Dr. Alexander Brzezny reported to the Grant County Board of Health in October that there is a regional presence of influenza occurring in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

Brzezny said there are three different strains – H3N2, H1N1 and B. In 2012 there were 164 children who died from influenza.

Brzezny noted There are several different kinds of vaccines, such as the 4 strain, 3 strain and nasal. The CDC has not yet made any recommendations as to which are the most effective.

Long term care facilities should have their policies in place to help prevent the spread of the disease, Brzezny said.

Brzezny also announced that the Health District is continuing to treat one tuberculosis patient who is on a 9-month treatment plan. This should be completed in November.
