Moses Lake girl remembers fire fighting uncle

MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake High School student is honoring her uncle, a volunteer firefighter who died on the job in 2001, with a "Cupcakes for Firefighters" event Saturday.

Hannah Castro, owner of her own business, Hannah Banana's Cupcakes, is using her senior project to honor the memory of Jeremy Chandler, a former volunteer with Grant County Fire District 5.

In June 2001, Chandler was operating a water tanker during a wildland fire near Moses Lake. When he was unloading the hose, he suddenly collapsed, suffering from an abnormal heart rhythm. Other firefighters came to his aid and provided CPR, but he didn't make it. He was only 27.

Chandler was honored on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Md.

Castro was just 6 years old when her uncle died. She's decide to tie her business of making cupcakes to honoring Chandler.

The "Cupcakes for Firefighters" event is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the District 5 fire station, located at 11058 Nelson Rd. NE in Moses Lake.

About 300 cupcakes will be provided, so people will be able to decorate their own cupcakes with handmade decorations. The fire trucks will be out for the kids to see. There is no cost but Castro is asking for donations. Any money raised will go to support District 5.

There is also a raffle, with tickets costing $5. Prizes include an iPod Nano, gift certificate to Rock Top Burgers & Brew and Perfection Tires, and tickets to the Holiday Light Show at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.
