EPHRATA - Grant County PUD has put up an emergency portable weather phone as a drawing prize in an effort to bring attention to emergency preparedness.

PUD is asking customers who have emergency preparedness kits to share what's in them through photographs. They will be posted on PUD's Facebook site for everyone to see.

A preparedness kit is a collection of items that help families in cases of power outages or a disaster. Emergency management experts recommend that families have a plan to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

"Having a kit will ensure that all of the important necessities to withstand an emergency are in one place," PUD publicist Chuck Allen said.

According Allen, everyone who sends the PUD a photo of themselves with their preparedness kit will be entered into a drawing for a free emergency portable weather radio.

To enter the contest, PUD customers need only to take a photo of themselves with their preparedness kits. They can upload the photo to Grant PUD's Facebook page, e-mail it to publicaffairs@grantpud.org or drop a print off at one of the PUD's offices.

The contest will end with the drawing on Dec. 2.
