BBCC volleyball misses playoffs

MOSES LAKE - The odds didn't shake out in favor of Big Bend Community College and the team fell just short of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges playoffs.

The Vikings finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the East region and the final playoff spot with Columbia Basin and Yakima Valley. The Yaks held the tiebreaker over both teams and advanced.

First year head coach Allison Baker helped improve the team by seven wins overall from the 2012 season and by three wins in the region. The 2013 Vikings finished 5-9 in league play and 11-24 overall.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Reeder led the team with 113 kills. Reeder averaged just over two kills per game with a hitting percentage of .159. Freshman outside hitter Shanie Bateman was the only other Viking to record over 100 kills, tallying 101 while averaging 1.91 per game.

Sophomore setter McKall Miller led Big Bend with 386 assists, averaging 6.66 per game.

Defensively, freshman defensive specialist Rebecca Egan led the Vikings with 213 digs and freshmen middle blockers Whitney Southam and Brooke Bowers each recorded 46 blocks to lead the team.

For Big Bend to reach the NWAACC playoffs the team must take advantage of home matches. The team was just 2-5 at the DeVries Activity Center this season.

The NWAACC playoffs begin Nov. 21 at Mt. Hood Community College.
