Fresh News from MarDon
All we need is some wind rain and snow and field hunting for geese will improve for all skill levels of field hunters. The many waterfowl refuges in Central Washington are holding big numbers of ducks and geese but without weather birds are inconsistent where and when they fly. Duck and goose hunting ends the last Sunday in January of 2014. Potholes Reservoir has some open water but the Sand Dune area and most of the Lind Coulee Arm are encroached upon by ice. All we need is a Chinook-wind to blow out the ice and that would result in an excellent January for hunting ducks.
Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill
I get a log of e-mails this time of year from people wanting to know what the ice conditions are on some of the lakes in our region. Two of the most popular lakes are Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee and Roses Lake, near Manson at Lake Chelan. When it comes to safe ice, I like to check on it myself, before I recommend fishing on it, so I decided to visit both Fish Lake and Roses Lake on Tuesday. It was a dreary morning in Leavenworth, but as I drove up the Tumwater Canyon the skies cleared and it was sunny. It was beautiful at Fish Lake, and I saw three groups of anglers fishing on the clear ice, that was at least five inches thick. I then drove up to Roses, and walked down to the small dock by the boat launch. I could see that someone had drilled a couple of test holes from the dock, but I could see some very soft spots just above the ramp. There is also a large area of open water at the bottom end of the lake. It will be a while before anyone should venture out on the ice on Roses Lake.

Meeting basic needs key for kids' education
In 1943, Professor Abraham Maslow of Brooklyn College proposed that human behavior is guided by five basic needs (in this order): 1) physiological, 2) safety, 3) belongingness, 4) esteem, and 5) self-actualization. People, children included, are motivated to fulfill the basic needs (1-3) first before moving on to the last two needs. In other words, food and shelter (1), safety and protection (2), love and affection (3) come before learning or achieving on tests or in school (4 and 5). Individuals will not move on to higher needs until the lower, basic needs are satisfied.

Covey answers letter claim
Dear CBH Readers: I have always said that if I make a mistake I'll be the first to admit it. In my political ad campaign, both Mr Anderson and Mr Skaug pointed out my error in stating that the algae bloom had been eliminated. I misstated that information due to a misunderstanding on my part. I should have said that the Eurasian Water Milfoil had been essentially eliminated by the herbicide treatment program.

Reader wonders about education in the U.S.
Food for thought:
Reader suggests taxing businesses to reduce emissions
"Let's stop debating the existence of climate change." "The world must stop putting carbon into the atmosphere and start putting it back in the ground". "This year, [Iowa]...received the most rain ever recorded in the month of May. Then it shut off and we went back into drought, with one of the driest Augusts on record - even drier than... last year's epic drought. July was one of the coldest on record, then we had one of the hottest Septembers."-Iowa Farmer, (http://thegazette.com/2013/11/10/climate-change-is-real/)
Reader wants dog owners to be responsible
Once again I am reminded of how many irresponsible dog owners reside in Ephrata. On my morning hike I still encounter numerous piles of dog feces left for others to step in. I am treated with hostility when I bring up the subject of (their) dogs pile left behind with comments like "it's not my dog's (even after witnessing their dog doing it's "dooty") or "it's the country, it's allowed". What has happened to society that allows these self-entitled dog owners to do this? Ephrata has a leash law and a "pick-up" law concerning dogs. Guess what Ephrata... Beezley Hill is in Ephrata city limits. I suggest re-naming the hill "dog toilet hill" so people will expect to run into land mines generated by these dogs, along with a dedication ceremony attended by dog owners exercising their "rights". Just sign me off as an angry old man who is tired of collecting dog crap on the bottom of my shoes so I can take it home as a souviner of Ephrata's finest citizens .... and their dogs. Come on Ephrata, show some pride in your community and respect for others that use the hill for exercise.

Readers support Mary Perry
We're supporting Mary Perry for election to the open director post of Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District. Mary has been a regular attendee at the district meetings the past two years. Reader wonders about health care
Initially Republicans killed ObamaCare's "public option" that might have led to national single-payer health care; and throughout they've relentlessly pursued their self-fulfilling prophecy that all ObamaCare shall fail. Perhaps we should reconsider single-payer, even though ObamaCare still contains very significant improvements over the present system at somewhat lower cost (nonpartisan CBO analysis).
Reader backs Mary Perry for MLIRD
There is a member of our community that personifies what is right with everything we value about our way of life in Moses Lake. She is a determined fighter for the lake, as evidenced by her history of regular attendance at the MLIRD meetings and her insightful answers at the recent candidates' forum. Additionally, she is an independent thinker who has demonstrated that she is able to ask tough questions without being intimidated. Finally, she is an intelligent advocate for what is best for our community as documented by her years of service on numerous community service groups including the city's Tourism Commission.
Reader supports Ron Covey
For almost three years we have been to every MLIRD meeting, except for one, and we have been a first-hand witness to the 2012 Board dysfunction and the productive turn-around in 2013. In 2012, Ron Covey was the lone voice of reason on the Board in a series of truly chaotic meetings and potentially disastrous decisions. Although verbally denounced, and regularly outvoted by the other Board members, Ron stuck to what he knew was right for the lake, the MLIRD staff and, most importantly, for the entire community. In 2013, Ron played a major role in supporting the new Board as they returned to a more rational, and cost-effective, method of MLIRD operations.

Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill
I mentioned earlier that there was good trout fishing at Lake Roosevelt, so I just had to go and try it myself. I took my time getting up there and when I was set up on the beach at Spring Canyon, it was already past 12:30. I rigged two rods and began to cast off the shore.
Moses Lake reader supports Bailey for MLIRD
The coming election for the Moses Lake irrigation district has consequences for the entire Moses lake community, regardless if you are in the voting district or not. Having served as the Chair for the DOE- TMDL (total maximum daily load) committee for Moses Lake, I am concerned about the direction we are headed and the health of our lake. I believe it is imperative we elect directors that have vision and courage to make the decisions necessary for the well-being and future of our lake, and people without a political or personal agenda, just a willingness to do what is right. Mr. Bill Bailey, a candidate for director is just such a man. Bill is a 38 year resident of Moses Lake as well as a successful businessman. Mr. Bailey will use his experience to work together with others to find solutions, not create more problems, and he is absolutely committed to the well-being of Moses Lake. Please vote for Bill Bailey, MLIRD Director.

The Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill
With the freezing weather we are getting right now I am looking for something to do that doesn't require putting my boat in the water. Those who have full canvas and a heater are probably laughing at me. I have the full set up but just don't ever put it on. Most of what I do in the winter is bobber and jig fishing and it just gets in the way. Well, I found something to get excited about that I can do from shore. The trout fishing at Lake Roosevelt is off the charts good right now. Anglers fishing off the shore near the Spring Canyon Park all the way up to Gifford are getting limits in an hour or two, and the fish are really nice. Most of them are going to be in the 15- to 16-inch class and very heavy bodied. There are carryovers to over 20 inches in Lake Roosevelt, too, but there are so many of these other fish in the water that they are few and far between. This is not complicated fishing either. Anglers are just finding a comfortable spot on the bank and casting dough baits or a marshmallow and worm combo to get their fish.

Good service and food. I had the tacos ask pastor which reminded me of authentic tacos. My daughter enjoyed the burrito which us always her favorite.
The Johnsons
Service was quick and friendly. We ordered the skirt steak and tacos with carnitas and our meal was very tastu. Beans were a little blah and the salsa was watery and not that great. But other than that we enjoyed our meal. This place is on the main downtown strip and there is not room for a truck and trailer, but they do have a parking lot verses the street side parking of most businesses in the area, and since we were bobtailing we were able to park in their lot.
CJs Pirate
This unpretentious little place puts out some well executed food. I've been for breakfast, lunch, and late day snack. Even my picky son was pleased with his food. Muchas gracias, Tacos El Rey!

Fresh News from MarDon
For the last several years ice has been as issue for Potholes Reservoir duck hunters by the end of November. This year we have been lucky to have no ice as of November 28, 2012 in the sand dunes. Our area is holding lots of ducks and geese, if you venture outside around dawn or dusk you can listen to all the geese in search of a corn field or some fresh water. We have been socked in with fog every day for that last week but that typically clears up by lunch time. Our area is enjoying the best hunting season and, other than the fog, mild weather conditions in years. If you are in need of a current hunting or weather report please give us a call (509) 346-2651.
