ML drops game to Grizzlies

SUNNYSIDE - A day after a 21-point thumping of Davis, Moses Lake boys basketball stumbled on the road against Sunnyside 56-59.

The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-2 in the Columbia Basin Big 9 and to 4-2 overall.

"We came out flat," head coach John Hohman said. "It was a tough win... it took a lot out of us for those kids and to be honest it was one of those things, you know, we're young and we went down and we weren't ready, we weren't ready to play."

The Chiefs held a six-point advantage entering halftime, but a 38-point second half allowed the Grizzlies to take the lead in the waning moments of the game. Sunnyside's Cody Fernandez was the star of the game racking up 25 points, five assists and three steals.

"Despite their record, [Sunnyside is] a whole lot better team," Hohman said. "I've heard that from a number of coaches who told me that who've watched them play."

Sophomore center Cesar Sandoval led the Chiefs in scoring with 13 points. Juniors Derek Martinez and Mitch Hohman eached added 10 points.

Moses Lake will take a break from league play when the team travels to Pasco Dec. 28. The Chiefs return home Jan. 10 to face Eisenhower.

"We just have to work on our execution," Hohman said. "We just have to work on detail execution, the little things and get better at those."

Moses Lake girls basketball also fell to the Grizzlies, 71-83.

The team is now 2-2 in the Big 9 and 4-3 overall.
