MOSES LAKE - Midway Elementary students and their parents could solve mysteries, meet Clifford the Big Red Dog, and listen to Christmas stories at the Family Literacy Night.

Literacy Night was in conjunction with the school's book fair, and featured the slogan "Reading is Spudtacular," coordinator Kristen Frederick said. The name was inspired by the baked potato feed that was part of the evening's events, Frederick said.

Classrooms were decorated to reflect different themes, Frederick said, and volunteers read stories to the kids who visited each room. The choices included the Christmas room (with Santa and Mrs. Claus doing the honors), a gingerbread room, a sports room, a mystery story room and a fairy tale room. Third grader Mario Patino liked the mystery room, he said, and that prompted him to buy a mysterious story at the book fair.

Clifford, the big red dog, had a room of his own and was there to meet the kids and their families. Another room featured stories in Spanish and English.

Reid Baker, of Baker Farms, donated potatoes for the baked potato bar, Frederick said. Families had their choice of chili, cheese and all kinds of potato toppings.

The idea was to encourage kids to read and help them stay interested in reading, Frederick said, and to encourage families to read together. Parents received information about techniques that can be used to encourage reading at home, she said.
