Fire destroys shop near Moses Lake
Smoke could be seen for several miles as a shop near Moses Lake burned Thursday afternoon.
MOSES LAKE - A shop building near Moses Lake was destroyed by a fire early Thursday afternoon.
About 1 p.m., Grant County Fire District 5 responded to a structure fire near the 2400 block of Road N Southeast and Baseline .5, south of Moses Lake. Nobody was inside the building when the fire started.
The building was fully engulfed and a portion of the roof collapsed before firefighters arrived. District 5 Chief Dan Smith said the majority of the large fire was under control within about 30 minutes.
Crews were on scene for several hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished because of the metal siding falling, according to Smith. Firefighters needed to ensure material underneath the metal was no longer burning.
Smith added the building is used as a workshop for a farm or trucking business and was filled with tools as well as one vehicle, which was also destroyed in the fire.
Nearly a dozen trucks and other vehicles were used and 21 firefighters responded, Smith said.
Smith said the initial cause of the fire appeared to be an electrical issue and the fire likely started from a heat lamp inside the building.
The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
