SPOKANE - Despite forfeiting two weight classes, Moses Lake wrestling was able to secure a hard fought win against East Valley (Spokane).

Moses Lake controlled the match with eight wrestlers leaving the mat with a victory, five by fall.

"In all we wrestled well," head coach Jaime Garza said. "We come back and now we got to hit it at the Tri State Tournament, it's a tough tournament."

Sophomore Cooper McCullough (106 lbs.) came away with a 6-2 win.

Moses Lake suffered a set back as junior Trey Long (113 lbs.), who took third place in state last season, lost 7-5 in overtime.

"That was... I don't know... a loss that should not have happened," Garza said. "He couldn't hold position and that's what happens. You got to be ready to wrestle whoever it is that's set in your path."

In the 120-pound weight class, senior Fernando Leyva and sophomore Clayton Clark both secured wins. Also, junior Chase Clasen (132 lbs.) pinned his man.

Although, senior Sean Cotton (138 lbs.) lost his match Garza and the coaching staff felt he wrestled well.

"As a whole, the coaching staff was most pleased with the way he wrestled and he lost 8-2 to a kid that had placed in state the year before," Garza said.

Sophomore Hudson Mauseth wrestled an opponent he faced last week who took him to overtime before he was able to get the win. However, Mauseth controlled the match and recored a second round pin in this instance.

"That was nice to see the improvement from one week to the next week," Garza. "The kid allowed Hudson a little wiggle room and next thing you know Hudson had him on his back."

Junior Nico Hernandez (182 lbs.) and sophomore Dylan Morris (220 lbs.) both suffered defeats, Morris' coming in quadruple overtime.

Sophomore Joel Torres (170 lbs.), junior Justin Sainsbury (285 lbs.) and senior Jordan Lacelle (195 lbs.) rounded out the winners.

Lacelle continued his hot start to the season with a first round pin.

"Scored off something that we've been coaching for quite some time and he used it and just like we do in practice and he was able to go out there and do it in a match and it worked," Garza said.

The Chiefs will compete in the Tri State Tournament this weekend before preparing for the highly anticipated dual with Lake Stevens.
