Royal girls fall 48-25

ROYAL CITY - The Royal girls fell to Medical Lake last week in prep basketball, 48-25, but it wasn't for lack of opportunities.

The Knights put up 49 shots from the floor. Only six, or 12 percent, found the hoop.

"We had our chances," coach Phil Daubel said. "What kept us in the game tonight was getting to the free throw line."

On the positive side, Daubel added: "We are playing more aggressive, and we are seeing progress. I've read the girls a basketball poem, One Possession. They really saw the meaning of that tonight.

Royal stayed with ML through the first period, trailing only 8-3. But shooting was frigid. The Knights did not make a field goal until the buzzer ending the first half.

"We were 1-for-22 from the field in the first half and missed six uncontested layups," Daubel said.

The highlight of the game for the Knights was the rebounding of Dory Floren. She picked off 16 missed shots. Brittany Hebdon added seven rebounds.

The leading scorer for the Knights with six points was Kailee Harris. Hebdon scored five points, and Floren had four. Hebdon also had four steals.

The Royal girls will resume their season Friday with a trek to River View. They will host Wahluke on Saturday.
